Women's day is a day to pay homage to all those specialist doctors who are serving the society and contributing to its welfare. They have not only built their careers from the scratch but also given life to those in need of it. Women doctors despite gender discrimination, have travelled a long way in their disciplines and they have uplifted many lives by saving them from medical complications.

Here are some of the doyens of the medical world who have been of immense inspiration and service to mankind. Their hard work made a big difference not only in the medical field but also to the lives of downtrodden women in India. These are the ones who have broken the gender stereotypes and created a discrimination free environment wherever they have served.

1. Dr. Padmavati Iyer

Dr. Padmavati Iyer who was 103 years old when she breathed her last, in 2020, was the senior most cardiologist who was treated as a godmother of Cardiology. She has been training patients from decades back in time and developed a whole new concept of heart treatment for the benefit of patients. She had several firsts to her credit, the first women cardiologist of India, who opened the first cardiology department in a hospital, and also founded the first heart foundation. She brought a prestigious status to the discipline of Cardiology in a big way. She died due to Covid complications.

Dr. Manjula Anagani

She is a Gynecologist who is an expert in minimally invasive surgeries. She has specialized in the area of Primary Amenorrhea. Undertaking a campaign Suyosha-A Perfect Woman' that aims at solving all women health problems including child abuse. An NGO by name 'Pratyusha Support' is working towards empowering women on many grounds. She conducts Free checkup for slum dwellers, and orphanages. She has spearheaded free cervical cancer vaccination for young girls in Andhra Pradesh schools.

2. Dr. V. Shanta

Belonging to a scientific lineage, and biologically related to CV Raman and S Chandrasekhar, Dr. Shanta joined Cancer institute in Chennai after completing MD in obstetrics. The Cancer institute was in its nascent stages wherein she worked for a minimal salary. She was the one who was responsible for this hospital to grow into a great place for cancer treatment in Chennai. She believes in detecting the Cancer early and changing the mindset of people towards cancer. She is recognized as a fellow in the National Academy of Medical Sciences. She received Padmashri , Padmabhushan and the Ramon Magsaysay award.

3. Dr. Indira Hinduja

An infertility specialist, and gynecologist, Dr. Hinduja was the first to introduce Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT) technique through which the first GIFT baby was born in January 1988. She had also delivered the first test tube baby in 1986. In January 1991, she came up with a oocyte donation technique to help menopausal and premature ovarian failure parents. She is practicing at P. D. Hinduja Hospital, Bombay.

4. Dr. Kamini Rao

A practicing doctor from Bangalore, Dr. Kamini Rao has conducted extensive research and contributed to the field of fertility. Graduating from St. John's Medical college, Bangalore she completed her studies in foetal medicine. South India's first Semen bank is credited to be her brainchild and she has pioneered laser assured hatching technique through ICSI. She has set up Milann centre for reproductive medicine and received her Padma Shri in 2014.

5. Dr. Kasturi Rajadhyaksha

Although she is in the illustrious line of famous gynecologists, she did not stop herself from dedicating her time and life to the cause of domestically abused women, and pregnant women in trouble. She established the 'Women of Indian Subcontinent Support group' that worked towards the cause of women workers. Co-founder of "Asha" " a ray of hope', an NGO that works for the cause of domestic abuse victims. she supported the idea of woman emancipation and helped the organization complete several of its objectives.
