Survey Reveals Women Have To Compromise Between Career, Family And Relationships In A Way Men Don't

National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) 2019-2021 shares the six key indicators to determine the position of women in the society. This includes the percentage of currently married women who usually participate in household decisions; women owning a house and / or land (alone or jointly with others), women who worked in the last 12 months and were paid in cash;

women having a bank or savings account that they use; women having a mobile phone that they themselves use; and women aged 15-24 years who use hygienic methods of protection during their menstrual period.

Women Compromise Between Career

To eliminate poverty and achieve economic growth, the holistic development of social, economic, cultural and political rights of women are critical. In India the men and women are improving in terms of equality, however the latter is way behind the race, finds Bumble which is the women-first dating and social networking app, in their annual state of the Nation report.

The survey was conducted to understand the current state of equality when it comes to dating and relationships, career, finances, are more. About 2500 Indians were interviewed who were above 18 years and it revealed a 'reality gap' and highlighted a stark difference in what is experienced in real life vs. what people surveyed think. The data says 32 per of Gen Z surveyed saying in India, women are still way behind men.

What Does The Report Say About Gender Equality?

According to the report, about 95 percent of the respondents believe that gender equality means men and women are equal and must have equal opportunities in everything. Also, the same percentage of survey respondents believed that to make the world a better place to live in, women rights must be improved. Also, the majority 84 percent of respondents which includes 87 percent of women surveyed, say that females have to compromise between family, relationships and careers in a way that males don't.

Is There Career Equality Between Men And Women?

There is discrepancy between what people expect and what people experience in the workforce, reveals the same survey by Bumble. Also, 89 percent of women respondents have pointed out that one of the main reasons of inequality in career achievements can be directly associated with the inequality in childcare roles.

Further, nearly 4 in 5 (73 per cent ) of total respondents - male respondents at 68 per cent and women respondents at 76 per cent believe that opting for maternity leave can impact women's career prospects in a negative way. Also, mothers who spend time at work feel more guilty to further their careers than fathers do- is what 84 per cent of respondents including 86 per cent of women respondents and 81 per cent of male respondents believe.

How Lack Of Financial Independence Can Impact Relationships

While broaching the topic of finances in a relationship can be daunting, but staying aligned with your partner when it comes to money can save the relationship to become messy in the future. Financial independence is essential in all relationships and the lack of it can result in unhappy relationships.

The survey by Bumble has further revealed that majority (86 percent) of respondents believe women are unhappy in relationships because they are financially dependent on their male partner and 87 percent of the people surveyed said that systems and social structure are also responsible for this issue.
