Gandhi's comments come in response to the online hate Irani faced after vacating her official residence in Lutyens' Delhi following her defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections in Amethi.

"Winning and losing happen in life. I urge everyone to refrain from using derogatory language and being nasty towards Smt. Smriti Irani or any other leader for that matter. Humiliating and insulting people is a sign of weakness, not strength," he wrote on Twitter.

Irani lost her seat to Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma by a margin of 1.4 lakh votes. She vacated her official bungalow at 28 Tughlak Crescent in Delhi after the election results were announced. This defeat came after she had previously defeated Rahul Gandhi in Amethi during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, earning the title of 'giant slayer'.

Gandhi's supporters labeled Irani's loss as a "humiliating defeat", pointing out her earlier celebrations over his loss. After it was decided that Gandhi would contest from Raebareli instead of Amethi, Irani remarked that it was a matter of pride for her that an ordinary BJP worker could send him packing from the constituency.

"I think the Congress nomination and the entire Gandhi family backing out from a battle in Amethi is significant because, as far as I am concerned, it is the proclamation of the defeat of the Congress party from Amethi," she had said before the election.
