From Hello To Head Over Heels : What’s The Science Behind Love At First Sight?
Srishty felt relieved walking into her first class, thinking she'd avoided any kind of ragging-until she saw a group lounging on the teacher's desk, lining up classmates for initiation. A slim girl with purple-streaked hair, piercings, a lace top and jeans gave her a sly smile, beckoning her over. Up close, Srishty noticed the girl's row of ear piercings and Sanskrit tattoo.
"I'll ask her the meaning of that tattoo if we ever become friends", she thought to herself even in nervousness "Name?" the girl asked, chewing gum. "Srishty," she replied, her voice tight. The short girl beside her chuckled, "Creation, huh?" the girl mocked. "Don't worry Creation, we will make sure to do your cremation." she added. At this both of them laughed giving each other a high five. Srishty stood awkwardly, wishing this ordeal would end soon. And just as she wished and before the girl could say anything more, she was saved by the bell.
Later, Srishty donned her glasses as a disguise, thinking that would save her for the rest of the day. A friendly guy named Suhaan offered to walk with her to the canteen, but her plan failed. "Look who's here!" the girl who wanted to rag her said, recognizing her immediately. "Doesn't she look adorable with her nerdy side?" her short friend asked. Srishty reluctantly put her glasses away. But the purple streaked girl insisted, "Put them on," giving her no choice.
Then, tugging her toward a scooty she added, "Get on. We're going for a ride, baby." Unsure but out of options, Srishty climbed on with the two girls, clinging tightly as they zoomed off, hoping this unexpected ride wouldn't be too wild.
The scooty stopped, and Srishty realised they'd reached another college. "What are they up to now?" she thought, feeling exhausted from the cramped ride. The purple streaked hair girl introduced herself as Cecile and draped an arm around her short cousin whom she called Jenny.
"Alright, Creation," Cecile said with a smirk, "we have a job for you. Jenny needs to get back at someone, and you're going to help us." Srishty felt a knot in her stomach. "Fine, but can you stop calling me 'Creation' after this?" she asked. Cecile laughed, probably pleased with her plan, while Srishty forced herself to stay calm.
Once they reached the classroom, Cecile instructed, "When the bell rings, go in and say, 'Excuse me, ma'am. I want to see Amal Raj,' in Hindi." Srishty asked, "Who's Amal Raj?" Cecile replied, "There is no Amal Raj; it's to disrupt the class. Just tell the teacher you're his girlfriend, then run." Srishty protested,
"Can't I just say 'excuse me' and leave?" Jenny leaned in, saying, "Just do it; this is how ragging works." The bell rang, and Srishty's heart raced. As she took a step, Cecile stopped her. "Wait until class is underway. You'll be a perfect interruption," she said with a wicked smile. After a tense few minutes, Cecile signalled her. "Alright, go on, and remember-every word in Hindi," she whispered, clearly enjoying every second.
Taking a deep breath, she knocked on the door and stepped into the classroom, catching the sharp gaze of the sari-clad teacher. "Kya... main... Amal Raj se... mil sakti hoon?" she asked hesitantly, her cheeks burning as the teacher reprimanded her to speak in English. When she finally muttered, "I am... main uski girlfriend hoon," the whole class burst into laughter.
Mortified, she bolted out of the room, only to be stopped from behind by a tall, fair-skinned guy who demanded, "Who the hell are you?" Frustrated, she shot back, "Who are you?" only to have him retort, "Wow, good question for someone who just declared herself as Amal Raj's girlfriend. Madam, I am Amal Raj."
Her eyes went wide, and she flushed pink, heat prickling her cheeks. This was him? Of all the people... Before she knew it, her embarrassment spilled over, and she burst into tears.
"Why are you crying now?" he asked, exasperated. "Are you trying to make a fool out of me? You embarrassed me in front of the whole class, and you chose Mrs. Deshmukh's class, of all classes! I can't believe this." He kept ranting as Srishty tried to pull herself together, but the humiliation felt too overwhelming.
Through her sniffles, she managed to stammer, "This... wasn't intentional. I didn't want to do this... Cecile and Jenny-they made me." "Oh, so Cecile made you do this? I understand why," Amal said with a chuckle. "What do you mean by that?" Srishty asked, curious. "They wanted to go out on a date with me which I politely refused. First Cecile, then Jenny. I think they're betting on me. They're pathetic," he sighed, looking up with a tired smile.
"They sure are. I'm sorry about all this. And Mrs. Deshmukh? Is she dangerous?" Srishty asked. "Pretty much. She loves making sarcastic comments, but I'll handle it. I'm a good student," he replied confidently. "Anyway, your ragging is over; you should be relieved," he then pointed out. "Yeah, I should be, but I'm not about to forgive those two," Srishty said, shaking her head. "By the way, as you very well know I'm Amal Raj. What's yours?" he asked. "Creation," Srishty replied with a teasing smile. "Huh?" he asked, confused.
"That's what Cecile calls me. It's Srishty," she clarified, a bit amused. "That's a beautiful name," he said, and Srishty felt herself smile wider. They decided to take a walk around the campus, breaking the silence when Srishty joked, "Don't you think people will actually mistake me for your girlfriend now?"
Amal raised an eyebrow, his dark brown eyes warm and intense, making her heart skip a beat. His easy charm, the way he carried himself with confidence, and even the dimple that appeared when he smirked-all made him somehow different, magnetic even. Caught up in her thoughts, she realised he was looking at her with a knowing smile.
"Do you think you'll make it back to class on time?" he teased. "And, no, I'm not hitting on you," he added with a playful grin. "Jenny and Cecile are probably lurking around, hoping to ruin our day and they intended to spoil our mood, your first day and my day, shouldn't we just keep talking to get back at them."
Srishty stood in deep thought "I'll just say I asked you out, and you rejected me," he suggested, his dimple flashing as he grinned. Just then, Jenny and Cecile showed up, looking slightly annoyed. "Ragging over; sorry, Amal, we used her..." Jenny said, moving closer. Srishty didn't budge. "Actually, it was a good experience, thanks to Amal. I'm staying," she replied confidently.
Widening their eyes in disbelief along with an angry sigh, Jenny and Cecile walked away. Srishty met Amal's gaze, and in that warm exchange, she felt an unexpected connection-a spark of something that felt very close to love at first sight. So the question is....
What is Love At First Sight?
Love at first sight is that magical moment when you instantly connect with someone, feeling a strong attraction with no real explanation for it. It often happens in just seconds, usually catching you off guard at the sight of someone special. When you actually start talking to them, that attraction can skyrocket, making everything feel electric, like fireworks or sparks flying. It is something that you always see in countless songs, TV shows, movies, and books.
A sudden, intense spark of attraction that seems to come out of nowhere. It's that instant where your heart races and everything else fades away, leaving you with this overwhelming longing for someone you barely know. There's no logic or explanation for it; it's just pure chemistry that sweeps you off your feet!
What is The Science Behind It
Love isn't just about feelings; it's largely driven by the brain and its processes. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for decision-making and critical thinking, plays a key role when we judge someone's appearance and behaviour.
When you feel attracted to someone, your brain releases a rush of dopamine, the feel-good hormone, along with oxytocin, which helps with romantic attachment and bonding.
Some studies even suggest that romantic love functions more like a motivational system, almost like an addiction. When our brains experience that pleasure, we crave more of it to keep that emotional high going.
In conclusion, love at first sight is a captivating experience marked by a whirlwind of emotions and physiological responses. While it may not carry the depth of long-term love, this phenomenon can ignite a powerful desire to connect with another person. The interplay of brain chemicals like oxytocin and dopamine, combined with physical attraction and eye contact, creates an intoxicating mix that can leave us feeling euphoric yet anxious.
Whether characterised by racing heartbeats, butterflies in the stomach, or an overwhelming urge to know someone better, love at first sight is a universal experience that speaks to the complexities of human connection. Ultimately, it's a beautiful reminder of how our bodies and minds intertwine in the dance of attraction.
