Expert Tips For Newborns And Mothers To Stay Healthy And Safe From Monsoon Illnesses
The monsoon season provides relaxation from the scorching heat, but it also poses several health risks, particularly for newborns and mothers. Increased humidity and soggy conditions foster the growth of bacteria, viruses, and insects, resulting in the predominance of monsoon-related illnesses.

To protect the health of both newborns and moms, some measures and good practices must be adopted.
Some of the valuable tips to help newborns and mothers stay healthy and safe during the monsoon season are -
1. Maintaining Proper Hygiene: Hand washing with soap and water regularly is critical for preventing the spread of diseases. Ensure that everyone who comes in contact with the newborn, including the mother, family members, and guests, strictly adheres to this procedure. Also, maintain the baby's living area clean and dry, including the nursery and changing table. Clean toys and surfaces with which the baby comes into touch on a regular basis to prevent illness.
2. Dress Appropriately: Choose breathable fabrics for the baby. Dress the baby in lightweight, cotton clothing that allows proper ventilation and prevents excessive sweating, which can lead to rashes and skin infections. Use mosquito nets, screens, or repellents to safeguard the baby from mosquito bites and the diseases they transmit, such as dengue and malaria.

3. Ensure a Healthy Diet: If possible, exclusively breastfeed newborns. Breast milk contains essential nutrients and antibodies that help build the baby's immune system, offering protection against monsoon illnesses. Breastfeeding mothers should maintain a balanced diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. These foods will provide essential nutrients to both the mother and the baby.
4. Prevent Waterborne Diseases: Boil or filter drinking water before consumption. Ensure that the water used for preparing formula milk is boiled and cooled down adequately. New moms should opt for home-cooked meals to reduce the risk of foodborne diseases. Raw salads and street foods can accumulate harmful bacteria and should be avoided during the monsoon season.
5. Stay Vigilant about Vaccinations: Follow the recommended immunisation schedule for your newborn diligently. Vaccines protect against various diseases and significantly contribute to building a strong immune system.
6. Maintain Indoor Air Quality: High humidity levels during the monsoon can promote the growth of mould and mildew, triggering allergies and respiratory problems. Consider using dehumidifiers or keeping the windows open for proper ventilation. Avoid exposure to rainwater and keep the baby away from wet areas to prevent fungal infections. Also, avoid taking the baby out during heavy rains or thunderstorms.

By implementing appropriate safeguards and adopting healthy practices, it is possible to ensure the safety and well-being of both babies and mothers throughout the monsoon season and they can fully embrace the enchanting beauty of the monsoon season while effectively preventing monsoon-related illnesses.
