The tale of Aishwarya bears witness to both the human spirit's tenacity and the unshakable dedication of medical experts. Her journey is formed by modern medicine and the remarkable power found in even the smallest beings, despite the many hurdles that preterm presented.

Initial
Hurdles
In
the
face
of
pressing
difficulties,
Aishwarya
struggled
with
respiratory
distress
and
needed
to
be
given
surfactant
and
ventilator
support.
In
the
early
days,
she
needed
intravenous
treatment
and
minimal
enteral
feeding
to
maintain
her
deteriorating
health.
Regretfully,
on
the
third
day,
there
was
a
spontaneous
intestinal
perforation
that
resulted
in
a
temporary
cessation
of
oral
feedings
and
medication.
Diagnostic
Journey
A
meticulous
diagnostic
journey
unfolded,
revealing
the
gravity
of
the
intestinal
perforation.
Despite
initial
attempts
using
a
drainage
system,
the
persistent
nature
of
the
perforation
mandated
a
critical
decision.
On
the
11th
day
of
her
life,
Aishwarya
underwent
an
exploratory
laparotomy
performed
by
the
skilled
pediatric
surgeon
Dr.
Shounak
Choudhury.
The
procedure
involved
the
intricate
removal
of
the
diseased
segment
of
the
intestine
(jejunum)
and
delicate
suturing
of
the
remaining
healthy
ends.
Surgical
Success
and
Challenges
Aishwarya's
surgery
encountered
challenges
due
to
the
thin
and
delicate
nature
of
her
intestinal
walls.
The
success
of
the
operation
emerged
as
a
collaborative
effort,
with
the
Neonatology
team,
Surgeon,
and
Anesthetists
working
in
tandem.
Post-surgery,
Aishwarya
spent
an
extended
period
in
the
Neonatal
Intensive
Care
Unit
(NICU),
gradually
recuperating
and
gaining
strength.
Additional
Hurdles
A
persistent
hole
in
the
heart
(PDA)
added
complexity.
Opting
for
a
conservative
approach
due
to
the
inherent
risks
of
open-heart
surgery,
the
medical
team
navigated
this
challenge
with
caution.
The
eventual
closure
of
the
heart
defect
by
the
age
of
two
months
marked
a
significant
triumph
in
Aishwarya's
remarkable
journey.

Survival
rates
for
infants
with
such

However,
the
strategic
use
of
advanced

including
the
Giraffe
incubator
for
precise
humidity
control,
coupled
with
vigilant
monitoring,
played
a
pivotal
role
in
ensuring
positive
outcomes
for
Aishwarya.
Post-Discharge
Challenges
and
Triumphs
Upon
discharge
on
22/10/23,
Aishwarya
still
required
minimal
supplemental
oxygen
through
nasal
prongs.
Addressing
complications
such
as
prematurity-related
bone
disease
and
anaemia
with
precision
through
supplements
and
blood
transfusions,
Aishwarya
continued
her
post-discharge
journey.
Consistent
weight
gain
and
successful
management
of
challenges
underscored
the
resilience
and
triumph
encapsulated
in
her
final
weight
of
1.8kg.
