Bipasha Basu Talks About Daughter Devi's Open Heart Surgery: When Do Infants Need A Heart Surgery?
Bipasha Basu, the renowned Bollywood actress, recently opened up about her daughter Devi's open heart surgery.
In an Instagram Live session with actress Neha Dhupia over the weekend, Basu revealed that the new parents discovered their daughter, then three days old, was born with two heart defects. 'I wouldn't wish this to happen to any mother.' Bipasha Basu said about the 6-hr-long open-heart surgery her baby daughter underwent when she was 3 months old.

This revelation has shed light on a critical question - when do infants need a heart surgery?
When Do Infants Need Heart Surgery?
It can be an overwhelming and concerning situation for parents, but understanding the critical moments when surgery is necessary can provide peace of mind.
1. Congenital Heart Defects
The most common reason for infant heart surgery is congenital heart defects, which are present at birth and require surgical intervention to correct the abnormality. For example, Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), and Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF).
2. Cyanotic Heart Defects
Cyanotic heart defects cause inadequate oxygen supply to the body, resulting in a blue colouration of the skin. Surgery is often needed to improve blood flow and oxygenation. For example, Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), Truncus Arteriosus, and Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS).

3. Acquired Heart Conditions
In some cases, infants may develop acquired heart conditions such as severe heart valve abnormalities or damage caused by infection that require surgery to repair or replace damaged heart valves.
4. Coarctation of the Aorta
Coarctation of the aorta can restrict blood flow, leading to high blood pressure and strain on the heart. Surgery may be necessary to alleviate this condition. That is the narrowing of the aorta, the main artery that carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the body.
5. Complex Congenital Heart Disease
Some infants can be born with complex heart defects involving multiple abnormalities like Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome (HRHS) where surgery is often required to address these complex conditions.

On A Final Note...
Bipasha Basu's revelation about her daughter Devi's open heart surgery highlights the importance of recognising when infants may need heart surgery.
While it is uncommon, certain congenital heart defects may necessitate surgical intervention. By being vigilant about the warning signs and seeking prompt medical care, parents can ensure the best possible outcome for their children.
