Usage of anti-depressants during pregnancy could pose certain problems to the foetus according to a new study. The umbilical cord could lengthen and this may deprive the foetus of enough oxygen.

This study claims that usage of certain antidepressants may impact the foetus in several ways. It may also cause movements inside the uterus.

Also, when the umbilical cord gets lengthened, the circulation to the foetus may get impacted. And this may affect the supply of oxygen to the foeteus. Generally, the foetal movements may affect the length of the umbilical cord.

Some surveys claim that a percentage (10-18%) of pregnant women tend to experience depression when they are pregnant. Out of them, some women turn to antidepressant drugs.

Depression could affect pregnancy and at the same time, even the attempts to treat it with the help of antidepressant drugs could also affect pregnancy.

That is the reason why health experts recommend approaching the problem of depression carefully especially during pregnancy. In fact, doctors generally consider the case history of a person before prescribing any medicine. And in this case, studying the individual before treating depression is important.
