A Tale Of Two Wombs: Rare Birth In China Sparks Glimmer Of Hope For Aspiring Parents

Happiness knows no bounds for a woman who is expecting a new-born child. Though they do feel nervous as the due day is at their doorstep, within there is extreme joy and excitement to have a little bundle of joy of their own flesh and blood. Like in Indian movies, many of them even believe they turn into a complete woman once they give birth to a child. Though having twins, triplets, quadruplets is now quite common, there have been some interesting stories around the world where even aged people are able to give birth to newborns.

Interesting is an understatement, the word extraordinary would be ideal for an incident that occurred this September in Northwest China. According to South China Morning Post and China National Radio, a woman named Li gave birth to twins, a girl and a boy from two fully formed uteruses, ovaries and oviducts included when she was eight and a half months pregnant.

Chinese woman gives birth to twins from double uterus

Why Extraordinary - Li apparently has a condition that only affects 0.3 per cent of women around the world. At the same time, most women having double uterus conditions often have miscarriages, underdeveloped foetuses, premature birth and post-partum haemorrhages. Though it's not impossible to conceive a child with a double uterus, it's pretty rare to be pregnant at the same time in each uterus, and if so it is pretty challenging. Here Li has surpassed the inevitable, making the incident pretty extraordinary.

What is the Double Uterus Condition or uterus didelphys - According to Mayo Clinic, when a female foetus starts out as two small tubes, it grows and the tubes join to create a large, hollow organ called the uterus. Occasionally, they fail to join entirely, leading each tube to develop into a distinct organ.

A double uterus may have a single opening leading to one vagina, which is known as the cervix. In certain instances, each uterus has its own cervix. Often, a thin tissue wall runs along the length of the vagina, dividing it into two separate chambers, each with its own opening.

Another Extraordinary incident - A woman named Kelsey Hatcher who hails from Dora, Alabama shared the same extraordinary happiness of Li, in December last year in a different way. Over the course of two days, she delivered her daughters Roxi and Rebel, enduring a total of 20 hours of labor. According to abcNews, she delivered Roxi on the evening of Dec 19th and Rebel on December 20th, early next morning though her original due date was on Christmas Day.

Cai Ying, the senior obstetrician of Xi'an No 4 Hospital said that it was very rare for a woman with double uterus condition to successfully give birth after 37 weeks which was different in the case of Li. The mother of two, had been pregnant once and had suffered miscarriage at 27 weeks due to factors unknown. Once she became pregnant in January, her doctors had planned to do all they could to ensure her safety and they performed a successful caesarean operation where Li gave birth to two healthy babies.

To conclude, such cases have only been heard of in places like China and places abroad. This incident comes as a beam of hope for women around the world who share this similar condition. So yes, the world is full of wonders, there's nothing that is impossible.
