Woven To Wow : The Best-Dressed Carpet At The Met Gala 2025 Was Made In Kerala

Every year at the Met Gala, the spotlight follows the fashion but few realise the story woven into the carpet beneath those designer heels. Below the stilettos, trailing silk gowns, and sharp tuxedo heels is not just any carpet but a handcrafted marvel from Alleppey, Kerala. For the third time in 2025, Extraweave, the parent company of Neytt Homes, supplied the carpet that transformed the Met into a canvas of Indian artistry.

From Alleppey To The MET

While the fashion world often leans on Milan or Manhattan for inspiration, the roots of this year's Met Gala carpet trace back to the backwaters of Alleppey. Extraweave, a global leader in sustainable flooring, manufactured the base carpet, an expansive 63,000 square feet using the finest natural sisal fibre hand-sorted from Madagascar and woven into a boucle texture.

It wasn't just size that made this carpet remarkable. A rich indigo base, punctuated with golden daffodils, formed a dreamy, ethereal backdrop. Neytt Homes provided the blank rug, and artists in New York meticulously hand-painted every inch, turning it into a collaborative, cross-continental work of art.

A Century In The Making

All About The Carpet At The Met Gala

Although Neytt is a relatively young design label, its foundation is built on decades of experience. It all began in 1971, when K. Velayudhan founded Travancore Mats and Mattings in Cherthala. His son, Santhosh Velayudhan, launched Extraweave in 2000, expanding the family's vision globally. The next chapter came with Santhosh's son, Sivan Santhosh, and his wife, Nimisha Srinivas, who co-founded Neytt Homes-a luxury design label breathing new life into heritage craftsmanship.

Artisans Behind The Glamour

The numbers behind the Met Gala carpet are staggering. It took 480 skilled workers across departments nearly 90 days to bring the vision to life. A total of 57 rolls-each 4x30 metres were carefully shipped to New York, amounting to 6,840 square metres of carpet. While the final aesthetic is often credited to stylists and event planners, the beauty of the Met carpet lies in its unseen layers: patience, precision, and passion.

Innovation Underfoot

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, Neytt's carpets are redefining what a floor covering can be. Think carpets that change design when UV light hits them, or subtly shift colour with changes in room temperature. Some even illuminate with a foot's pressure, making every step feel like an experience. It's luxury, yes-but it's also innovation rooted in storytelling.

A Global Footprint

Neytt and Extraweave's creations have graced the floors of the White House, the palatial corridors of Rambagh Palace, the serene luxury of Six Senses resorts, and the timeless elegance of Taj Hotels. Their role? Often understated. Yet, much like a good design, felt more than seen.

What makes their approach unique is flexibility: customers are given plain, luxurious base carpets, which can then be customised to fit the artistic direction of a brand, hotel or even the Met Gala. This collaborative model allows creative freedom while ensuring the foundation is world-class.

Recognised And Revered

Their commitment hasn't gone unnoticed. From the European Product Design Award to the DNA Paris Design Award and the Elle Deco International Design Award, Neytt and Extraweave have carved a niche in the global design community. These honours do more than recognise fine craftsmanship-they spotlight the subtle, steady rise of Indian design on the global stage.

A Legacy Unfolding

Amid the noise of fast fashion and passing trends, Neytt Homes builds with intention-focusing on what lasts: craft, culture, and a sense of belonging. With roots in a small town in Kerala and a presence that now spans the world, they're proving that luxury doesn't have to shout. Sometimes, it just needs to be walked on.
