In 1883, he founded Benz and Company, where he produced industrial engines. Based on Nicolaus Otto's patent he began designing a 'motor riage' with four stroke engine. After three years he was granted a patent for his gas- fueled automobile. He began selling his automobile the same year.

In 1903, Karl Benz retired from Benz and Company . By this time his designs were already outdated when compared toGottlieb Daimler's designs. When the Daimler-Benz AG was initially formed he served as a member of the supervisory board, until his death.

Engines and Designs

From the start Mercedes is known for its outstanding engines and designs because of its amazing contributors.

The Mercedes Simplex built by DMG in 1902 was the first purpose built race. They were designed similar to the horse riages. This designed model dominated racing for years. 'Bird Beaked 'built by Benz & Cie, set the land speed records by reaching 228.1km/h in 1909 several times. This made a statement in the automobile industries. This model was faster than any other automobile or train or plane.

Mercedes was the first to build the world's first robot , in 1980's with the help of Professor Ernst Dickmanns. The re-engined autonomous S- Class Mercedes achieved 175 km/h on the highways. The invention influenced robot research worldwide.

Mercedes- Benz SLR McLaren is the fastest automatic road in the world. Even the fastest street-legal saloon in the world is the Mercedes-Benz BRABUS (tuned) W211 'E V12'.

Speed is not just its prime concern but safety too. Mercedes was the first to introduce the safety cage, traction control, stability control, air bags and anti lock brakes (ABS) in automobile industry. Through simple inventions it made a big difference in the production of automobiles worldwide. Presently Mercedes-Benz is developing "fatigue warning system" for the motorists.
