The list of people who mysteriously disappeared will run very long but celebrities are difficult to miss. Even if they try to hide, there will always be someone who recognizes them. In spite of this fact, if they manage to vanish into thin air, it does become a rather baffling case.

Listed here are some such famous people who mysteriously disappeared never to be seen or heard of again.

1. Jimmy Hoffa (Union Leader): This infamous union leader disappeared from a restaurant’s parking lot on July 30, 1975. For the crimes he committed as the President of America’s larger labor union he had to serve four years in prison after which he was pardoned by the then US President Richard Nixon. His list of crimes included bribery, mail fraud and jury tampering. Though the FBI never gave up the search for Hoffa his body was never found.

2. Amelia Earhart (Pilot): She was the sixteenth woman to be issued a pilot’s license and the first woman pilot to fly across the Atlantic, a feat she achieved in the year 1928. Fondly known as ‘Lady Lindy’, she was also the first person to have flown over both the Atlantic and Pacific. Sadly, in the year 1937, when out on a mission to circumnavigate the globe, she mysteriously disappeared. After a lot of search and many theories on her disappearance she was declared dead in 1939.

3. Virginia Dare: Though an infant, she was a celebrity nonetheless. She was the first person to be born to English parents on American soil but could not grow up to be one. Her parents were among the first 120 settlers who had landed on Roanoke Island, Virginia, in 1587.

Nine days after her birth her grandfather, the colony’s governor, set out to gather supplies in England. When he returned in 1590 there was no there was no trace of the colony and everyone including the infant has disappeared.

4. Henry Hudson (Explorer): This English explorer set out on expeditions looking for ice-free passages to reach Asia. While two remained absolutely unsuccessful, the third one brought him to the New World and a river was named after him. On his fourth expedition he chanced to come upon a body of water that later came to be known as Hudson Bay. On his expedition of 1611 he never made his way back home.

5. Vittorio Missoni (Fashion Designer): Born in 1954, Vittorio Missoni is best known as the CEO of the Missoni brand. The Missoni brand was founded by his parents which was later controlled by Vittorio and his two siblings.

In the year 2013 a plane carrying Vittorio, his wife and three others mysteriously disappeared off the coast of Venezuela. The wreckage of the plane was located a couple of months later.

6. Zodiac Killer (Murderer): Definitely not a celebrity but murderers too become famous for the wrong reasons. Between 1968 and 1969 a killer who identified himself as Zodiac terrorized the San Francisco Bay area.

He is said to be responsible for at least five murders. After having committed the crime, he is said to have sent letters about the crime to local newspapers. His identity has however remains a secret till date.

7. Wallace D Fard (Minister): This Islamic minister born in 1877 is known as the founder of the Nation of Islam. In the year 1930 he established the Temple of Islam and called upon the blacks to be prepared for a race war.

He gave his followers Arabic names which replaced the ones that originated with their slavery. In 1934 he disappeared mysteriously with no trace of him to be ever found.

8. Harold Holt (Prime Minister): How many times do you hear of a Prime Minister disappearing? Hardly ever but this is exactly what happened in Australia. The much loved 17th Prime Minister of Australia went out for a swim with two more friends in December 1967.

The location was his favorite Cheviot Beach near Portsea. The waters were choppy and Holt never returned from his swim. He was never found.

9. D B Cooper (Air Pirate): What was his real name? Nobody knows this air pirates real name and identity. All that one knows about him is that he called himself D B Cooper and he managed to hijack an aircraft carrying 36 passengers in the year 1971.

He carried a briefcase in which he claimed to have a bomb. Once $200,000 and several parachutes were delivered to him he asked the pilot to fly very low and in the darkness of the night he jumped out of the plane. He was never seen again.

10. Belle Gunness (Murderer): This is another infamous person who disappeared into thin air. Between the years 1884 to 1908, this serial killer is said to have murdered close to 40 people. This Norwegian lady moved to the United States in 1881 following which several suspicious deaths took place. When she disappeared in 1908 remains of several of her victims were unearthed from around her house. However, Gunness remained untraceable.
