What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word ‘festival’? Yes, a vibrant display of colours. All over the world there are innumerable colourful festivals celebrated throughout the year.
Each one has its own significance in its region and is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. There are many festivals that remain confined to their region with the outside world knowing very little about them.
On the other hand, there are many that have crossed boundaries and oceans to make place for themselves in countries around the world. In either case, the spirit of celebration does not suffer. In fact, new dimensions are added to them.
When we talk about the colourful festivals celebrated in the world, there are some very famous festivals in the world that always draw attractions. Tourists plan their tours keeping in mind the timing of these festivals.

Chinese New Year, China
As the name suggests, the Chinese New Year is celebrated at the turn of the Chinese calendar. It is one of the longest running festivals in China with celebrations starting from the New Year's Eve to 15 days into the New Year. The festival is specifically marked with dragons and lanterns and can be said to be one the most colourful festivals celebrated in the world.

Carnival of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
With the word carnival in its name, this festival is one overflowing with fun, dance, music and colours. This festival can be traced back to 1723 and is considered to be one of the biggest and most famous festivals of the world. The Rio carnival is held before Lent every year and the highlight of the event is the competition among the several Samba schools in Rio.

Holi, India
When mentioning colourful festivals, one cannot miss out Holi from India. Also known as the festival of colours, Holi is the day when people celebrate by applying colours on one another. The origin of this festival has a mythological explanation and signifies the victory of good over evil. Holi is celebrate as per the Hindu lunar calendar and falls mostly in March.

Albuquerque International Balloon Festival, Mexico
When the sky is dotted with hundreds of hot air balloons, the sight is worth a watch. This balloon festival was started in 1972 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the 770 KOB Radio. During all the nine days of this festival, the sky takes up many shades and colours giving a spectacular view.

La Tomatina, Spain
The celebration area in this festival has only one dominant colour - red. This is so because of the presence of a large amount of tomatoes. Squish, throw and drench your fellow revellers in tomato juice. Though there is only one colour, it is yet one the very colourful festivals celebrated in the world. It is said to have started in 1945 and is celebrated on the last Wednesday of August.
