Remembering Indian Revolutionaries: A Saga Of Patriotism

Its been 66 years since we gained independence. During this long period of time, India has passed through a phase of a complete metamorphosis. People, culture, dress, thoughts, beliefs, in short everything that is 'Indian' has changed to a great extent. But the enthusiasm to celebrate the freedom has not changed. Independence day still instills us with pride and nostalgia of our freedom struggle.

Independence day is a reminder that we are breathing in this free air because some people chose to sacrifice themselves for the sake of our country. These people were some of the great youths with the similar dreams and aspirations like many of us. But they chose the way of martyrdom and sacrifice. Yet they did not live to see the day we attained freedom. So, here is a tribute from Boldsky to all those unsung Indian revolutionaries who made themselves immortal in history.

Lala Lajpat Rai

He was popularly known as the Punjab Kesari. He was one of the trio of the extremist leaders known as the Lal, Bal and Pal. He led a huge protest against the Simon Commission, where he was lathi charged and he succumbed to the injuries.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak

He was a revolutionary from Maharashtra. He was also a journalist, social reformer, lawyer and an activist. He was popularly known as Lokmanya. He was the strongest advocates of Swaraj.

Bipin Chandra Pal

He was the 'Pal' of the Lal, Bal and Pal trio. He was responsible for initiating the first popular upsurge against the British colonial policy. He is also known as the Father of Revolutionary Thoughts.

Khudiram Bose

He was hanged at the tender age of 18 for throwing a bomb at a British carriage along with his friend Prafulla Chaki. This was done after the partition of Bengal. While Chaki committed suicide, Khudiram was hanged by the British officials.

Ram Prasad Bismil

Bismil was an Indian revolutionary from Uttar Pradesh. He is famous for hatching the Kakori conspiracy. The poem 'Sarfaroshi ki tammanna ab hamare dil me hai' is attributed to Bismil. He was one of the founding members of the Hindustan Republican Association which was later carried forward by Bhagat Singh.

Ashfaqulla Khan

He was a friend of Bismil and a great revolutionary. He was also involved in the Kakori conspiracy case. He also wrote poems in Urdu under the pen name of 'Hasrat'. Ashfaqulla and Bismil were hanged on the same day, date and time.

Bagha Jatin

His real name was Jatindranath Mukherjee. He was the leader of the Jugantar party that was the central association of revolutionaries in Bengal. He died in a gunfire as an aftermath of the German conspiracy in 1915.

Chandrashekhar Azad

Azad was a charismatic revolutionary from Madhya Pradesh. He re-organised the Hindustan Republican Association after the death of Bismil. It is said that he was never caught by the British. He committed suicide by shooting himself on the head than giving up to the British.

Bhagat Singh

Bhagat Singh was the most popular revolutionary of the time. Born into a Sikh family, Bhagat Singh became the true inspiration for the youth. He along with Batukeshwar Dutt, undertook the mission of throwing bombs in the Legislative Assembly and then surrendering to the British officials. He used the British court to put forward the views of the revolutionaries in front of the people. He was later hanged by the British for causing a great deal of nuisance to them.

Subhash Chandra Bose

We definitely cannot miss out our very dear Netaji in the list of revolutionaries. Netaji gave up his blooming career as a civil servant to work towards achieving freedom. He formed the Indian National Army and fought from outside India to drive out the British.
