Beyond Doomsday- Evolution Or Extinction?

Over the last couple of weeks, there have been umpteen endeavours to explain the "Mayan Calendar Doomsday" coming up on December 21st 2012.

First in foremost, who are these Mayans? Apparently, they are an ancient culture and one of the three to invent the zero, sharing that distinct honour with us Indians and the Babylonians. As experts say, the Mayan Calendar is regarded as the most accurate calendar devised by any ancient culture. The Mayans most likely used the calendar as a way to explain scientific occurrences. In ancient times, Kings saw themselves as an embodiment of time and it was really a way of how they fixed themselves as being a key part of the universe.

Now, what happens in a couple of days is that there is merely going to be a change in cycle, which means that on 21st December the Mayan cycle changes from the 12th baktum to the 13 baktum; 1 baktum being 144,000 days.
It is said that this Mayan calendar, which predicted the end of the world on 21st December, is merely a misinterpretation which dates back to the 1960s when archeologist Mike D Cole published "The Maya" where he suggested that the Mayan calendar would end in 2011 or 2012 and hinted in jest that it meant the end of the world. When we contemplate the expression "end of the world", the term "world" can refer to a cycle; a period of time; a world age era. Therefore, 2012 is signaling the completion of one World Age Cycle, transiting into an emerging New World Age to come.

As the doomsday approaches, one wonders if it is a myth after all?! In fact, some modern Mayans have dismissed this entirely, calling it a "European Invention". Others are calling it a commercial project in an attempt to attract attention and tourists to the wrongly thought of as extinct Mayan culture and place. Tell me- did you ever hear of Maya out of this context? Yet, there are those who say it's a perfect time for renewal, rebirth and transformation.

According to legend, 21st December will signal a change from the corn people to the men of honey, who are in harmony with nature and, like bees, only take from it what they need. It is also being called the Age of Conscious Evolution - evolution by choice and not by chance. What is being required by us is to learn to co-evolve with nature and co-create with Spirit. Now, that is understandable enough.

Let's look at it this way- since this cycle repeats itself only every 400 years, it seems like we have been given an opportunity to consciously transition to the next stage of evolution or face extinction.

While I've tried to demystify the Doomsday Conspiracy (so to speak), I cannot vouch for the authenticity of any of these explanations; but it certainly looks like we are in between the devil and the deep blue sea. However, I personally tend to agree with this mere "change of cycle" rationale. Maybe, it's my inborn fear that makes me just debunk the reality of doomsday that has certainly bored its way into society's psyche.

Many have turned to social media to share elaborate last-minute bucket-list ideas. A Facebook user framed it very eloquently: He urged his friends to get right with God or make love with a stranger. This could be good advice. But if or when 22nd dawns, while ‘getting it right with God' will hold you in good stead, waking up in bed next to a stranger....will be at the least....strange!! You would rather be extinct then, than wanting to evolve!

But I say, just be happy to be alive and go ahead with your Christmas and New Year shopping!
