Excited couples, looking forward to their new life dream endless things that they would want to include in their new household. At this point of time, it is money that most people look for. Secondly, after all the wedding shopping spree and the honeymoon expenses, very few are left with any balance in their accounts to set up their new house.

A survey done across 100 couples who are going to tie the knot admit that they would prefer taking cash than other gift items for their wedding. Many confessed that most of the wedding gifts are of no use and kept away in the attic.

27 per cent of couples prefer shopping vouchers to dresses or jewellery. Only 19 per cent of people wanted traditional gifts.

"Couples asking for money instead of a wedding list is a growing trend. In the past they have been too embarrassed to ask, but since the credit crunch their confidence has grown and many have chosen to abandon tradition for cold hard cash," said Catherine Westwood, the editor of Wedding magazine.

Increasingly, couples are paying for their weddings themselves with just 26 per cent of couples depending on their parents for funds.
