Ramadan shopping
Muslims around the world are in the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. It is a time when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk while focusing on prayers, charity and personal accountability.
Eid shopping is a grand affair for some. Lot of shopping and goodies and bought for the feast. New clothes for the occasion goes without saying. For guys, the shopping list seems to be pretty simple. A simple white kurta pyjama would do.
For girls, Eid is the time to dress up in traditional clothes, they buy salwar kameez for themselves. When we talk of Eid shopping, one cannot imagine the celebration without bangles and henna-a dark coloured substance extracted from the leaves of a tropical Asian plant. These days bangles are shaped into many styles and designs. Plastic, glass bangles with mirror work, steel bangles with funky but artistic work are, attracting huge number of women. Likewise, 'Henna', is another must Eid item. This is available in various styles, with glittering disco and plain cones. To name a few are Rani, Najo, and Mussarat. Bangle sellers look cheerful over the huge turnout of the customers. However many girls feel that the bangle culture is diminishing. There are some, who do not like wearing bangles at all not even on grand occasion like Eid.
A recent tradition of exchange of Eid cards has brought a distinct colour to the festivity. Card shops and stalls are thronged with people from every walk of life. Specially the young lot, who are engaged in selecting cards for friends, family, peers, suitors with a merry smile on their faces.
People buy new things for the house like bedsheets and curtains, stands for the perfume bottle. People's purchasing power is increasing and for the poor, it is an uphill task to make both the ends meet, but still they try to make Eid a happy occasion with their limited resources and budget.
Shopping is generally fun but during Eid it becomes an occasion for both the consumers and the shopkeepers as well. All in all, the joy of shopping never seems to come to a halt till the onset of Eid.
