Paris Olympics 2024 Gets Its ‘Cap Catcher' Moment, Netizens Call ‘It Biggest Cheer In The Game So Far'
Post unusual opening ceremony on Friday, 26 July, the Olympics are now in full swing. On 28 July, the morning's events were too packed with drama and excitement, from Simone Biles making her grand return to a convicted child rapist being booed during his debut. But one event in particular caught everyone's eye and netizens are totally in splits over that.

One moment during that day's swimming heats has already been hailed as the best of the Paris 2024 Olympics and the footage has gone viral on X of a new legend, dubbed the 'cap catcher'.
Unexpected Hero Emerges
Before the final of the women's 100m breaststroke prelims today, American swimmer Emma Weber lost her cap in the pool during a previous heat. As NBC wrote on X: "Who do you call when a swim cap falls in the pool?" The answer turned out to be "BOB THE CAP CATCHER."
The cameras captured a man in brightly colored and patterned speedos strutting out to retrieve the cap. The crowd cheered as he stripped down to his swimsuit and fished it out, creating an iconic moment.
Users shared clips online, with one writing: "The moment of #paris2024olympics so far..." Others called it big 'main character energy', while another said: "He's an icon, he's a legend, he is the moment." Someone else added: "That was hilarious with the commentary. The crowd was in it! With the whistles haha."
Social Media Reactions
Many viewers expressed their desire for an interview with him. One viewer commented: "The dude who just dove into the pool to retrieve the cap while wearing colorful speedos during the women's heat - you're a hero." Another wrote: "The lifeguard finally having his moment at the Olympics by having to retrieve a swim cap from the bottom of the pool."
The sentiment was echoed by another who said: "Olympics have peaked. Middle-aged French Dad bod in brightly patterned budgie smugglers fetching a rogue swimming cap out of the pool. The biggest cheer of the games so far, well played that man." Gold medal for him then.
Bizarre Olympic Sports
The Olympics have seen some strange sports over the years. For instance, the painting was once an Olympic event. From 1912 to 1948, medals were awarded for artistic projects inspired by sport, including painting and sculpture.
Tug of War was also part of five Olympic Games from 1900 to 1920. This playground classic even stirred up drama at the 1908 London Olympics when Team USA accused Team GB of cheating due to their 'illegal' heavy footwear.
Hot air balloon racing made its debut at the 1900 Olympics. Competitors were judged on distance travelled, altitude reached, landing accuracy, and even photography skills. However, this sport was discontinued after motorized sports were banned.
Controversial Events
Live pigeon shooting appeared only once at the 1900 Olympics. Competitors aimed to shoot as many pigeons as possible, resulting in around 300 pigeons being killed during the event.
Pistol dueling was another short-lived event that began in 1906. Initially involving shooting at dummies, it later evolved into competitors shooting wax bullets at each other. By 1908, this dangerous sport was removed from the Games.
The Paris 2024 Olympics continue to deliver memorable moments and unexpected heroes like Bob The Cap Catcher. As we look back at past bizarre sports and enjoy current events, these games remind us why we love watching them unfold.
