Operation Sindoor : Massive Flight Disruption As Top Airlines Suspend Operations
Travellers across India are experiencing significant disruptions to air travel this week, as domestic airlines respond to temporary airspace restrictions imposed by aviation authorities. These measures have been introduced in the wake of Operation Sindoor, a precision military campaign launched by the Indian Armed Forces targeting terrorist outposts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation, initiated earlier this week, has had a ripple effect on civil aviation, leading to widespread flight cancellations and airport closures across northern and western India.
Passengers are being urged to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport, as the restrictions are expected to remain in place until 05:29 IST on 10 May 2025. Airlines have rolled out passenger-friendly policies, including full refunds and fee waivers, but the onus remains on travellers to stay informed and plan accordingly.
Air India Suspends Flights To Several Key Destinations
Flag carrier Air India has temporarily suspended services to and from several cities, including Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, Jodhpur, Amritsar, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot. The airline confirmed that the decision follows a directive from aviation authorities regarding airport closures in light of ongoing military operations.
The suspension will remain effective until the early hours of 10 May. In an effort to assist stranded or affected passengers, Air India is offering a one-time exemption from rescheduling fees, as well as the option to cancel bookings for a full refund. The airline has encouraged passengers to use digital platforms or contact customer service for assistance with revised travel plans.
IndiGo Cancels Over 165 Flights
IndiGo, India's largest low-cost airline, has also taken a substantial operational hit, with over 165 flights cancelled across a range of cities. These include Amritsar, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Dharamshala, Gwalior, Jammu, Jodhpur, Kishangarh, Leh, Rajkot, and Srinagar. The cancellations will continue until 10 May, mirroring the nationwide advisory issued by aviation authorities.
The airline has responded with flexibility, allowing affected customers to reschedule their flights without incurring additional charges or opt for a full refund. IndiGo is urging passengers to confirm their flight status via the official website or mobile application, emphasising the importance of real-time updates during this temporary but impactful disruption.
SpiceJet Also Hit By Northern Airport Closures
SpiceJet, another major player in the Indian aviation sector, has released a statement acknowledging the temporary closure of several northern airports, including Dharamshala, Leh, Jammu, Srinagar, and Amritsar. The airline advised travellers to adjust their itineraries and remain vigilant for further updates via official communication channels.
With the current situation subject to change depending on military developments, SpiceJet has reassured passengers that all necessary steps are being taken to accommodate travel needs and minimise inconvenience.
Broader Implications For Civil Aviation
The widespread impact of Operation Sindoor on civil aviation underscores the intersecting nature of national security and public mobility. While the closure of airspace is a precautionary measure to ensure safety, it also highlights how strategic defence operations can influence day-to-day civilian life, particularly in border-adjacent regions.
For many passengers, especially those travelling for urgent or personal reasons, the sudden changes have brought challenges. However, the cooperative stance taken by airlines through flexible rescheduling and refund options is helping mitigate some of the stress caused by these adjustments.
Final Advisory For Passengers
Travellers planning to fly to or from affected cities in the coming days should remain proactive. It is advisable to check flight statuses directly with the airline, avoid unnecessary travel to airports unless flight confirmation is received, and allow additional time for any last-minute changes.
Though disruptive, these measures reflect the gravity of the current situation and the priority placed on national safety. As the country navigates this critical moment, a shared sense of patience and preparedness among passengers, airlines, and authorities alike will be key to managing the days ahead.
