Onam 2023: 10 Delicious Items In Onam Sadya That You Can Try At Home And Have A Perfect Feast
Onam is a vibrant festival celebrated in the southern state of Kerala for 10 days. It marks the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali and signifies prosperity and abundance and is basically a harvest festival.
One of the highlights of this festive occasion is the grand feast known as Onasadya, which consists of a variety of delicious vegetarian dishes. Some say it consists of 25 food items, but we have listed ten for beginners. Check out the list!

1. Avial - Mixed Vegetable Delight
Avial is a popular dish prepared with mixed vegetables cooked in coconut-based gravy. It is seasoned with curry leaves and garnished with grated coconut. This simple yet flavorful recipe is perfect for beginners.
2. Olan - Pumpkin and Coconut Stew
Olan is a mild stew made with ash gourd or pumpkin, cooked in coconut milk along with green beans and spices like ginger and green chilies. Its subtle flavours make it an ideal side dish for Onam Sadya.
3. Erissery - Creamy Pumpkin Curry
Erissery combines ripe pumpkins, red beans, grated coconut, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, and other spices to create a creamy curry that pairs well with rice or rotis. This easy-to-make dish will surely impress your taste buds!
4. Parippu Curry - Lentil Delight
Parippu Curry is a simple and nutritious lentil dish made with moong dal (split green gram), coconut, and spices. It is usually served as the first course in the traditional Onam feast.
5. Thoran - Stir-Fried Vegetables with Coconut
A classic Kerala recipe, Thoran features finely chopped vegetables like cabbage or beans stir-fried with grated coconut, mustard seeds, and curry leaves. This dry side dish adds crunch to your Onam meal.
6. Puliyinji - Tangy Ginger Tamarind Chutney
Puliyinji is a tangy chutney made from ginger, tamarind pulp, jaggery, and spices like red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Its sweet-sour flavour complements the other dishes in the Onam feast.
7. Kalan - Yogurt-based Raw Banana Curry
Kalan is a delicious raw banana curry cooked in yoghurt gravy along with coconut paste and aromatic spices like fenugreek and black pepper. Its creamy texture makes it a must-try dish for Onam.
8. Inji Curry - Ginger Delight
Inji Curry is a sweet and tangy ginger pickle made with jaggery, tamarind pulp, green chillies, and spices. It acts as a palate cleanser between the various courses of the Onam feast.
9. Pachadi - Yogurt-based Vegetable Raita
Pachadi is a refreshing raita-like dish made by combining yoghurt with vegetables like cucumber or beetroot, tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves. It adds a cool contrast to the spicy flavours of Onasadya.
10. Payasam - Traditional Rice Pudding
No Onam feast is complete without Payasam! This rich dessert is made with slow-cooking rice or vermicelli in milk along with ghee, nuts, raisins, cardamom powder, and sugar. Indulge in this heavenly treat!
