National Consumer Day is observed on December 24 every year in India in remembrance of the day on which the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, received the presidential nod, thus becoming an Act. This was the first significant endeavour of the Indian Government regarding the protection of consumers from unfair trade practice, defective products, and poor services.

With time, however, the original 1986 Act has since been replaced by the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which is much more contemporary and formulated specifically for today's modern marketplaces that include online platforms.
