Female chicks or the hen are sent to egg farms for genetic manipulation and selective breeding. According to surveys, they produce 250 to 300 eggs per year. The sad fact is that the wild hens can actually lay only 10 to 15 eggs yearly.

About 95% of all egg-laying hens in the USA, approximately around 300 million birds, spend their lives in small battery cages. They cannot even stretch their wings.

The packed hens can only stand or crouch on the hard wires of the cages. This in return cuts their feet painfully. Amidst all this, the furious hens peck each other from stress. It can cause injuries and even death.
Fact #4
The natural life-span of a chicken is said to be anywhere between 10 and 20 years, but in an egg industry, most of the hens are killed when they are just 1½ years of age. This is done when their egg production declines.

According to reports, over-production of eggs can cause diseases, pain and an early death. The hens suffer from painful, debilitate and fatal conditions that result in early death.

For each egg shell that is produced, a hen must mobilise approximately 10% of the calcium stored in her bones. This is something that makes the hen weak.

Most of the hens suffer from ‘fatty liver syndrome'. This is due to the liver cells that are constantly producing fat and protein required for the egg yolks.
