When we say lost places in India, you immediately start thinking of mythology. But many parts of ancient mythology actually have a base in history. We have all read about the epic battle of Mahabharata. The grand battlefield of Kurushetra still remains as a standing proof of the fact that the battle was actually fought. Similarly, the lost places in India serve as proof that ancient civilisations prospered here.

You must be familiar with the concept of lost cities. For example, Atlantis in Greece is an ancient city in which only the worthy could live. But today, the city is lost to modern civilisation. But Rome, that was once the most modern city in the world cannot be called a lost city because it still remains where it was.

The lost places in India comprise of such ancient cities that have fallen prey to natural calamities or political vandalism. And now, little or nothing of their original splendor remains. These lost places in India can either be found in myths or through the excavations in such places.

Here are some of the ancient lost places of India.

Vijaynagar

The current location Vijaynagar is Hampi in North Karnataka. Vijaynagar was a great city that was a part of the Sangama dynasty. The city prospered around 15th century AD. City fell under the siege of Sultans of the Deccan and finally disintegrated.

Puhar

Puhar used to be the capital of the Chola dynasty. This port city was then called Kaveripattinam. It is now speculated that a majority of the city was washed away by a deadly tsunami.

Muziris

Muziris was supposed to be a busy port on the Malabar coast that traded with the Western civilisations. The Roman's and Greeks had this city on their map of India. In present day India, it could be located around Pattanam. A massive earthquake is supposed to have destroyed the city.

Lothal

Lothal in an ancient city in Gujarat that shares ties with the Indus Valley Civilisation. This city has been extensively excavated to find modern buildings with bricks and an effective drainage system.

Kalibangan

Kalibangan in Rajasthan is another lost place in India that can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilisation. This historic site has a citadel like structure still intact.

Surkotada

The long run of Kutch is home to one of the last traces of the Indus Valley Civilisation. Surkotada remained a functional city1700 BC when the rest of the civilisation was destroyed. A huge fire finally devoured this city.

Pattadakal

Not much is known about the Pattadakal apart from the fact that it is combination of Hindu and Jain architecture. This city and much of its history is lost to us today.

Dwarka

The mythical city of Dwarka rose out the middle of the ocean on Lord Krishna's command. This city was Krishna's capital and had 900 golden palaces. After Krishna and the entire Yadav dynasty collapsed, the city too descended into the sea following great tsunami. Today, the city lies under sea and is still being excavated.

Kishkinda

Kishkinda was the ancient city were the Vanaras (the clan of Hanuman) were supposed to have ruled. At one point of time, even Hampi was a part of this empire. But today, we see no traces of it.

Kumari Kandam

Kumari Kandam was not just a lost city. It is supposed to be an entire continent that existed in the Indian ocean south of present day Kanya Kumari. It was the land of the original Dravidians, the Tamils. It is hard to say how large this landmass was because legend takes over facts in this case.
