Durga Puja is the famous Bengali festival that is celebrated in West Bengal. Durga Puja (worship Goddess Durga) is the nine days festival that is celebrated with fervour among Bengalis. It is one of the most important festivals in the Bengali calender.
In Bengal, Durga Puja is also known as Durgotsavo, Durgo Pujo, Akalbodhan, Maha Pujo, Sharodotsab to name a few. Whatever be the name, the joy and celebrations of the festival start months before. All the artists start making Durga idols after the Ganesh Chathurthi.
People start putting up pandals and decorate the streets with lights. The craze of Durga Puja can be felt even overseas. In Bengal, people enjoy pandal hopping whole night with friends and relatives, just to see different pandals and the idols of Maa Durga. Every year, pandal associations put up creative and artistic idols of Goddess Durga.
In Kolkata alone, more than 2000 pandals are put up on streets, grounds and houses. One of the oldest Durga Puja is held in Konnagar (Hooghly district), West Bengal. Apart from, Konnagar, Katwa, Lataguri, Siliguri, Cooch Bihar and many more places are well known for the Protima or idol.

In one of the Puja pandals, Maa Durga has been made as a poter thakur. Two different houses for (Ganesha and Saraswati) and (Lakshmi and Karthik) gives a clear meaning.

The Bengali Beauty
In a Durga Puja pandal, Maa Durga has donned the traditional white and red border Bengali saree. Long curly hair, angry eyes and 10 weapons finish the look of Mahishasura Mardini.

In this idol, Maa Durga is shown as Shakti who standing after killing the demon King Mahishasura with her trident. She is celebrating her victory over the demon.
