The concept behind the introduction of the royal Palace on Wheels train was the luxury train coaches which were used as personal railway coaches by rulers of the princely states from Rajasthan, Gujurat, Nizam of Hyderabad and Viceroy of the British India. The luxury train was started on January 26th, 1982 for traveling but now has become a hard core business in tourism.

The 7 days journey on the Palace on Wheels carries with it an intrinsic ambience and royal facilities which makes the traveler live a journey of leisure while exploring the places at the same time. The package of the journey varies from place to place.

Departure: The Royal train departs from New Delhi and travels around Rajasthan with stoppages in Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Sawai Madhopur, Chttaurgarh, Udaipur, Bharatpur and The Taj Mahal in Agra.

Tickets: The travel packages were earlier restricted to foreign nationals by the Government of India but recently opened ways for the Indians to travel. However, the tariffs are still in US Dollars which range from $670 ( Single occupancy ), $500 ( Double Occupancy ) and $450 ( triple Occupancy).

Facilities at Palace on Wheels:

Accommodation: The luxury train has 14 coaches named after the former Rajput States like Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Alwar and Bikaner to name a few and each coach has four cabins with twin beds. The air conditioned deluxe salon/chamber has amenities like wall to wall carpeting, satellite television, attached toilets with hot and cold water, DVD player, a lounge with a book rack and personal attendants (known as Khidmatgar) . Luggage is taken care of by the attendants as soon as you enter the luxury train. The guest is provided with an arrival kit which consists of stationery items, brochures, cards etc.

Food: The Royal train has an exotic array of dishes in the menu at two restaurants namely- The Maharaja and The Maharani with Rajasthani ambience. You can choose from continental, chinese, Indian and the very special Rajasthani cuisines. Rajasthani dishes like Daal Bati Churma, Gatte Ki Sabji, Bajra Roti and many more are specialties at the food section. Mineral water is provided to the guests and a bar with Indian and international spirits are available.

Spa and Saloon: This facility is newly introduced after the renovation done in 2009. the spa offers ayurvedic massage to keep you fresh throughout the running journey. Other services like laundry and doctors are also available. Souvenirs like gift items are given to the guests.

Interiors: Each saloon highlights the culture of the state which are beautifully represented through the use of furniture, handicrafts, paintings and furnishings. The saloon has cream yellow color on its exterior walls with a logo Coat of Arms of the princely states. So, you can enjoy the cultural ambience in the carriage and explore the natural beauty from the window.
