July 14th Bank Holiday: A Cultural Festival Shuts Down Services In One Indian State
As July unfolds, several states across India gear up for regional festivals and observances that impact banking schedules. One such significant date is Monday, July 14, when banks in Meghalaya will remain closed in observance of the Behdeinkhlam festival. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has officially listed this closure under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which determines holidays for banks across the country.
Let's take a closer look at what this means for customers, and what other bank holidays are lined up in July 2025.
Why Banks In Meghalaya Are Closed On July 14
The closure on July 14 isn't a routine weekly shutdown-it marks Behdeinkhlam, a deeply rooted cultural festival among the Pnars, a sub-tribe of the Jaintia community in Meghalaya. Celebrated every year in Jowai, this post-sowing festival is a call for good health, spiritual cleansing, and blessings for a fruitful harvest.
Dancers take to the streets, colour floods the town, and giant wooden structures called rots are carried to a sacred pool in a symbolic gesture to ward off disease-especially cholera. It's one of the most vibrant public events in Meghalaya, and its cultural importance is such that banking operations pause for the day.
How Bank Holidays Are Categorised
Bank holidays in India aren't one-size-fits-all. The RBI classifies holidays into three categories:
- Under the Negotiable Instruments Act - such as the Behdeinkhlam holiday.
- Under both the Negotiable Instruments Act and RTGS Holiday - which impacts real-time fund transfers.
- Account closing holidays - reserved for annual financial wrap-ups by banks.
Additionally, all banks across the country stay closed on Sundays, and on the second and fourth Saturdays each month unless there's an exception.

Other Key Bank Holidays In July 2025
If you're planning any banking activity this month, it's worth noting the full list of holidays to avoid unnecessary runs to a closed branch:
- July 14 (Monday) - Behdeinkhlam Festival (Meghalaya)
- July 16 (Wednesday) - Harela (Uttarakhand)
- July 17 (Thursday) - U Tirot Singh Death Anniversary (Meghalaya)
- July 19 (Saturday) - Ker Puja (Tripura)
- July 20 & 27 (Sundays) - Nationwide bank closure
- July 26 (Saturday) - Fourth Saturday (Nationwide closure)
- July 28 (Monday) - Drukpa Tshe-zi (Sikkim)
These dates reflect the diversity of India's local customs, each holiday may be minor on a national scale but carries deep regional importance.
What This Means For You
If you're in Meghalaya or have banking dealings there, plan your transactions around July 14 and 17, as banks will remain closed on both days. While digital banking services such as UPI and internet banking may still function, services requiring branch visits like cash deposits, cheque clearances, or locker access will be unavailable.
It's also a good idea to keep a buffer around July 26 and 27, as banks across India will remain shut for the fourth Saturday and Sunday.
