ISRO’s Experiment Could Change Everything : India’s Step Towards Space Agriculture
On January 4, 2025, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) made a significant breakthrough by successfully germinating cowpea seeds in the zero-gravity environment of space. This achievement, part of the CROPS (Crop Research in Outer Space) experiment, marks a major step forward in the field of space agriculture, paving the way for future space missions and the potential to sustain human life on other planets.

CROPS Experiment : Nurturing Life In Space
The CROPS experiment was carried out aboard the PS4-Orbital Experiment Module (POEM), a component of ISRO's PSLV-C60 mission launched on December 30, 2024. This mission included 24 payloads, with POEM-4 being a standout. Equipped with solar panels, a lithium-ion battery, and advanced navigation systems, POEM-4 provided a controlled environment for the cowpea seeds to germinate.
Within just four days, the seeds sprouted successfully, demonstrating the potential for plant growth in space. The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) played a crucial role in developing this experiment, aiming to deepen our understanding of how plants grow in microgravity.
