Indian Independence Day 2025: Who Else Marks August 15 As A Symbol Of National Pride And Freedom?
At the stroke of midnight on 15 August 1947, India stepped into independence after nearly 200 years of British colonial rule. Every year since, the Prime Minister hoists the flag at the Red Fort, a tradition that binds together memories of the struggle, the cost of freedom, and hopes for the future.
For most Indians, 15 August means tricolour flags, patriotic songs, and remembering the hard-won freedom of 1947. But this date holds significance far beyond India's borders. From Asia to Africa and even a small European principality, 15 August is a day when several nations mark their own journey to sovereignty.

South Korea And North Korea: Liberation Day

On 15 August 1945, both Koreas were liberated from Japanese colonial rule after 35 years. Known as 'Gwangbokjeol'- Restoration of Light Day, it's celebrated in both countries, though their paths have diverged drastically since then. In South Korea, the day brings parades, concerts, and the ringing of the Boshingak bell in Seoul. In North Korea, it's marked with official speeches, cultural performances, and state ceremonies.
Republic Of The Congo: Independence From France

Halfway across the world, the Republic of the Congo, often called Congo-Brazzaville marks 15 August as the day it became independent from France in 1960. Independence Day here is a lively mix of military parades, cultural festivals, and public celebrations.
Bahrain: Independence Date vs. National Day

Bahrain officially became independent from Britain on 15 August 1971. Yet, if you visit the country on that date, you won't find any public celebrations. Instead, Bahrain's big national holiday falls on 16 December, commemorating the accession of Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa to the throne. The celebrations stretch over two days, blending state ceremonies with fireworks and festivities.
Liechtenstein: National Day By Chance

One of the smallest countries in the world, Liechtenstein also celebrates on 15 August-though not for independence. The date coincides with the birthday of Prince Franz Josef II and the Feast of the Assumption. It has since become a National Day where citizens and royalty mingle in Vaduz, ending with a grand fireworks display.
One Date, Different Stories
What's fascinating about 15 August is how it links very different histories-colonial struggles, royal traditions, political milestones. For India, it's the day the nation awoke to freedom. For others, it's a moment of liberation, unity, or even coincidence. In 2025, as India celebrates 78 years of independence, it's worth remembering that across the globe, flags of different colours will also be flying high on this same date.
