Released annually, this year's list features individuals who donated INR 5 crore or more between April 2023 and March 2024.

The report reveals significant growth, with the threshold to enter the top 10 doubling to INR 154 crore, and the number of donors giving over INR 100 crore increasing to 18. India's philanthropic landscape is evolving, with a mix of first-generation entrepreneurs, established family businesses, and new-age givers like Nandan Nilekani and Subroto Bagchi, alongside impactful female philanthropists like Susmita Bagchi and Rohini Nilekani.

The data shows India's potential to be a global leader in philanthropy, with inspiring stories of generosity, such as Abhishek Lodha's INR 20,000 crore pledge.The EdelGive-Hurun India Philanthropy List 2024 has recognized 203 philanthropists, with 96 new entrants, who together donated a whopping INR 8,783 crore-an impressive 55% increase compared to two years ago.

Shiv Nadar, 79, retained his title as India's most generous philanthropist for the third time in five years, donating INR 2,153 crore, or INR 5.9 crore per day. Rohini Nilekani, with INR 154 crore, is the most generous woman on the list, while Mukesh Ambani ranks second with INR 407 crore. Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha, at 38, is the youngest to feature.

New entries like Krishna Chivukula, who donated INR 228 crore, made a big splash, while the list saw a significant rise in major donors, with 18 individuals now donating over INR 100 crore annually. Women's philanthropy saw a boost, with 21 women featured.

The list also revealed a surge in self-made philanthropists (up by 43), and education remains the top cause, with over INR 3,600 crore dedicated to it. Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru are the top cities for donors, with the pharma sector leading in contributions. The EdelGive-Hurun India Philanthropy List 2024 reveals that the top 10 philanthropists collectively donated INR 4,625 crore, making up nearly 53% of the total donations. New entries Krishna Chivukula, Susmita & Subroto Bagchi ranked 7th and 9th, respectively.

Six of these top givers focused on education, showcasing a strong commitment to improving access to quality learning across India. Shiv Nadar & family topped the list with INR 2,153 crore, primarily supporting education and arts through the Shiv Nadar Foundation.

Mukesh Ambani & family secured second place with INR 407 crore, with Reliance Foundation focusing on rural transformation, healthcare, education, and more. The Bajaj family climbed to third with INR 352 crore, funding social development through their foundations. Kumar Mangalam & family, in fourth, donated INR 334 crore, primarily for education, healthcare, and women's empowerment.

Gautam Adani & family ranked fifth with INR 330 crore, with most of their donation going to education and health. Nandan Nilekani, in sixth, contributed INR 307 crore, marking a 62% increase from last year, while Krishna Chivukula debuted in seventh with INR 228 crore for IIT Madras.

Anil Agarwal & family ranked eighth with INR 181 crore, supporting socio-economic development through the Anil Agarwal Foundation. Susmita & Subroto Bagchi entered the top 10 in ninth with INR 179 crore, with a focus on public health education. Lastly, Rohini Nilekani ranked tenth with INR 154 crore, dedicated to education and social causes through her various initiatives.

Leading the way is Rohini Nilekani, who donated INR 154 Cr, making her India's most generous woman. Through her philanthropic work with Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies and EkStep, she focuses on education and social causes.
