Early Life
Born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli village of Karnataka, Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was shaped by both the simplicity of village life and the hardships of losing their parents at a young age. Never one to be disheartened, Visvesvaraya utilized his circumstances to fuel his unwavering determination to seek quality education and set the foundations of an illustrious career in engineering.
Education
His indomitable spirit and hard work saw him earn a degree in Civil Engineering from the College of Engineering, Pune in 1884. After a successful stint as the chief engineer of Mumbai, Visvesvaraya etched his genius in India’s history as the architect of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysuru. A testament to his innovative strategies, this dam remains one of the greatest feats of engineering in India.
Contributions
Visvesvaraya's contributions were not just restricted to feats of engineering. He spearheaded several initiatives for economic and social development, demonstrating his versatile genius. As a visionary, he laid the foundation of the Government Engineering College in Bangalore, now known as the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering. Recognizing his services to the nation, Visvesvaraya was honored with India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955.
Achievements
His legend continues to inspire millions of engineers across India. To honor his memory, his birthday, i.e., September 15, is celebrated as Engineers' Day all over India.
