Good Friday 2025 : How Different Countries Around The World Commemorates Christ’s Sacrifice
Today, April 18, 2025, Christians around the world mark Good Friday, the day that remembers the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is one of the most important days in the Christian calendar, observed during Holy Week, just two days before Easter Sunday. Though the message is the same everywhere-honoring Jesus' sacrifice, each country expresses this in unique and powerful ways.
Rome, Italy : A Walk With The Pope
In Rome, thousands of people gather outside the Colosseum for the Way of the Cross, led by the Pope. This candlelit procession follows 14 stations, each representing a part of Jesus' journey to the cross. Statues and crosses are often covered in purple or black cloth, and many people fast and pray in quiet reflection.
Jerusalem : Walking Where Jesus Walked
In Jerusalem, the city where Jesus was crucified, pilgrims retrace the Via Dolorosa-the path Jesus is believed to have taken to Golgotha. Many carry wooden crosses, walking in silence and prayer. In the evening, a symbolic funeral procession honors Jesus' burial, adding to the solemn spirit of the day.
Malta And Spain : Powerful Processions
On the island of Malta, towns hold large processions. People dress as figures from the Bible, some carry statues or drag chains to show their faith. It's a moving and powerful display of devotion.
In Spain, Good Friday is part of Semana Santa (Holy Week). People called penitents walk in long processions wearing traditional robes and tall hoods. These events are serious and deeply emotional, meant to honor Jesus' suffering.
England : A Public Play In Trafalgar Square
In London, Trafalgar Square becomes a stage for "The Passion of Jesus." Over 100 actors reenact the story of Jesus' death and resurrection. The play is free to watch and also streamed online, giving people a chance to reflect on the story in a powerful, visual way.
Central America : Art In The Streets
In Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, Good Friday is full of color and creativity. People make Alfombras, or "carpets," using colored sawdust, flowers, and sand to decorate streets with religious images. These beautiful artworks are walked over during processions, reminding everyone how short life is and the power of faith.
Mexico And Peru : Strong Traditions
In Mexico City, the district of Iztapalapa holds a dramatic reenactment of Jesus' crucifixion. Thousands watch as a man carries a heavy cross, surrounded by actors playing Roman soldiers.
In Peru, people gather around a painting called the Lord of Miracles, created by an enslaved artist in the 1600s. It has survived many earthquakes and is a symbol of strength and faith for many.
Jamaica And Bermuda : Local Beliefs And Joy
In Jamaica, a special egg tradition takes place. People put egg whites in a glass of water and leave it in the sun. As shapes form, some believe they show clues about the future or even how someone might die-a mix of old beliefs and religious respect.
In Bermuda, Good Friday is filled with joy. Families fly kites, eat hot cross buns, and enjoy codfish cakes. This tradition began as a way to teach children about Jesus rising to heaven.
Germany : A Realistic Reenactment
In Bensheim, Germany, the Italian community puts on a serious performance showing Jesus' final hours. One actor plays Jesus being "nailed" to the cross, using safe and symbolic methods that still leave a deep impression on those watching.
A Day Of Profound Meaning
No matter how it's observed, Good Friday is a day of deep meaning for Christians across the world. Some celebrate with art, some with silence, some with drama, and others with tradition. But all remember the same message: the love, sacrifice, and hope that lie at the heart of the Christian faith.
