From Kanpur To Space: Love Story Of India’s First ISS Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla
When Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla made history as India's first astronaut aboard the International Space Station, he became a symbol of national pride. But behind every space hero is a gravity that holds them steady.
For Shubhanshu, that anchor is Dr Kamna Shukla-his wife, friend, and constant support. Their story isn't just romantic-it's resilient, real, and deeply rooted in small-town beginnings.

Here's a timeline of how their journey from Kanpur classmates to cosmic partners unfolded.
2002-2003: From Classmates To Something More
Both Shubhanshu and Kamna were students in Kanpur when they first met. He was laser-focused on a career in defence; she was immersed in her dental studies. While the two came from academic families, their connection was emotional and intellectual.
Their friendship evolved quietly, free from dramatic gestures but marked by genuine companionship. Shubhanshu, always on the move with defence commitments, stayed in touch through emails and occasional visits.
2005-2006: Defence Academy, Discipline, And Distance
After clearing the UPSC exam, Shubhanshu joined the National Defence Academy, graduating with a BSc in Computer Science in 2005. The next year, he completed training at the Indian Air Force Academy and was commissioned as a Flying Officer.
With him flying sorties and her pursuing a career in dentistry, they managed to keep their bond alive. While most long-distance relationships fade, theirs is strengthened, with shared dreams and patience.
2010-2011: A Quiet Proposal, A Lifelong Partnership
Around 2010, after years of friendship and commitment, Shubhanshu proposed to Kamna. By 2011, they were married. It wasn't a glamorous celebrity wedding-it was simple, heartfelt, and attended by close friends and family.
Kamna, who had by then built a successful career in dentistry, continued practicing, while Shubhanshu's career in the Air Force took him across multiple states and assignments. The couple navigated the pressures of service life with grace-staying grounded through daily routines, mutual respect, and shared goals.
2022-2024: The Call To Space
Shubhanshu's career took a giant leap when he was selected for India's human spaceflight programme. What followed was rigorous international training in Russia, simulations under extreme conditions, and emotional sacrifices. Kamna stood by him-often communicating across time zones while juggling her clinic, household, and family responsibilities.
While he prepared to leave Earth's atmosphere, she became his Earth-providing calm, structure, and balance. Friends recall Kamna's steady presence during his absence and her quiet pride in his growing recognition.
2025: India's First Astronaut On The ISS
In 2025, Shubhanshu Shukla made history as the first Indian astronaut aboard the International Space Station. As the rocket launched into orbit, Kamna watched from Earth with moist eyes and steady hands.
She later shared in interviews how surreal the moment felt-and how proud she was to see the man she once knew as a shy, sharp boy from Kanpur now orbiting the Earth.
Despite being apart physically, they stayed connected emotionally through voice notes, brief video links, and shared rituals. Kamna even kept his favorite book near her nightstand as a daily reminder of his presence.
Present Day: Still Together, Still Grounded
While Shubhanshu continues to train and contribute to India's space exploration goals, Kamna remains his emotional backbone. The couple's journey is a powerful reminder that behind India's technological leaps and space milestones lie deeply human stories of commitment, sacrifice, and enduring love.
They don't post much on social media. They don't give joint interviews often. But anyone who knows them says the same thing: theirs is a love written in the stars-and lived in the small, silent details that rarely make the news.
