Exclusive Interview : Ash Chandler On Jazz, Bollywood, And His Highly Anticipated Musical!
Ash Chandler is a versatile artist with an impressive set of talents ranging but not restricted to acting, comedy, writing, singing and performing. This multi-faceted performer was born in USA and moved base to India in 1999. Since then he's performed as a comedian, acted in a few movies and has been writing and composing songs.
He was in Bengaluru over the weekend for a special Jazz performance at the popular Olive Beach restaurant. Boldsky caught up with him for a Tête-à-tête about his music and the upcoming projects.
Core Identity - The Comedian, The Actor Or The Musician?
Ash feels all these forms gratifying in their own way. "The root for most of it is my job as a writer. I get to express myself on paper and then on stage" says Ash. He finds 'Acting' as more of a vacation from himself and it's the most collaborative of the arts for him.
He gets most inspired by Sinatra and his music. While 'Sting' as a songwriter defines perfection for him.
Jazz Across Borders
Ash was greatly inspired by the New Romantics movement of the 80's and eventually discovered Jazz at a young age. Most Indian audiences he says, seem to like stuff that's familiar so he has adapted to give them a good time because for him as a performer that's the most important thing.
Ash says, "Jazz is universal". Today's quintessential Desi music is a vibrant melting pot, seamlessly blending various influences. Bollywood, in particular, is rich with adaptations of timeless jazz classics, while the presence of artists inspired by jazz is widespread and ever-growing.
Bollywood Stint
Ash has acted in a few Bollywood movies early on and he even recorded a Spanish song for the movie 'Guzarish' but that dint make the final cut. He says he's open to a Bollywood project if an opportunity comes his way.
A Musical
Chandler's new Funk/Rock/Dance band, CitiZen, is gearing up to hit the studio soon. The band, featuring Mariia Chandler, Mark Kuteev, and Chandler himself, promises to bring a fresh sound to the scene. In addition, his highly anticipated musical, 'That's Life', is set to debut this year, featuring 11 original songs written by Chandler. After three years of hard work and dedication, he's eagerly awaiting the moment it finally comes to life
