Daily UPI User? All You Need To Know About The New UPI Rules That Just Rolled Out This August
Whether it's splitting dinner bills, paying the cab driver, or recharging your DTH on the go, UPI has quietly become part of our everyday routine. For many of us, opening Google Pay or PhonePe comes more naturally than taking out a wallet.
Now, starting August 1, 2025, a few important rule changes are in place for all UPI apps, thanks to updated guidelines from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). These changes are meant to improve performance, reduce network congestion, and make digital payments more efficient.
Here's a clear breakdown of what's different and what stays the same.

Balance Checks Capped At 50 Per Day
You can now check your bank account balance through any UPI app up to 50 times a day. This applies only to manual checks when you tap "Check Balance" yourself, not automatic app syncing.
To help you keep track, your updated balance will now show up automatically after every UPI transaction, so you don't need to keep checking it separately.
Viewing Linked Bank Accounts Limited To 25 Times
Checking which banks are linked to your number? You can now do this 25 times a day per UPI app. While most users won't hit that limit, it helps prevent background traffic that slows the system down for everyone.
Autopay Transactions Now Run Outside Peak Hours
Subscriptions, utility bills, EMIs, SIPs, if they're set to autopay through UPI, those payments will now go through only during off-peak hours:
- Before 10:00 AM
- Between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM
- After 9:30 PM
This change is meant to ease congestion during busy transaction hours and keep things running smoothly.
Stuck Payments? Only 3 Status Checks Allowed
If a UPI payment is pending, you'll now be able to check its status just three times, with a 90-second gap between each attempt.
This helps avoid excessive server requests that can clog up the network when many users are checking simultaneously.
Recipient Details Will Appear Before You Hit 'Pay'
To reduce wrong transfers and fraud, UPI apps will now clearly display the recipient's bank name and transaction ID before a payment is confirmed.
This gives you one last look to confirm that your money is going to the right person.
Applies To Every UPI App
These changes are platform-wide. Whether you're using Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or any other UPI app, the rules apply everywhere. Apps can't customise or skip them.
NPCI will monitor for compliance and take action if platforms don't follow through.
What Hasn't Changed?
Your everyday UPI limits remain the same:
- 20 transactions per day
- ₹1 lakh maximum per day (standard for most users)
Nothing changes here-so your regular usage stays unaffected unless you're a high-frequency user.

In Short
Most people will hardly notice these changes unless they're in the habit of checking balances or payment statuses often. But behind the scenes, these rules help keep UPI running reliably especially as more users go digital every day.
