Constitution Day 2025: President Murmu To Lead Central Hall Event, India Gears Up For Rashtriya Ekta Padyatra
On 26 November 2025, India will observe Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas) with a series of national and grassroots events. This day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution on 26 November 1949 and highlights the values that guide the country's democracy. The preparations for 2025 are extensive, symbolic, and designed to engage citizens across the country, from the halls of Parliament to villages and schools.
National Ceremony At The Central Hall
- A major event is set to take place in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan (the old Parliament building) at 11:00 AM on 26 November 2025, marking the centerpiece of Constitution Day 2025.
- The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, will lead the ceremony and conduct the reading of the Preamble.
- Other dignitaries attending include the Vice-President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker, Union ministers, and Members of Parliament.
During the event:
- The Constitution will be released in nine additional Indian languages, ensuring broader accessibility.
- A commemorative booklet, showcasing the art and calligraphy of the Constitution, will be launched.
- The celebrations also include digital engagement, with citizens invited to participate in online readings of the Preamble, quizzes, and essay competitions under the theme "Hamara Samvidhan - Hamara Swabhiman" (Our Constitution - Our Pride).
- Schools, colleges, and other institutions will conduct seminars, short films, debates, exhibitions, and creative activities like poster-making and painting competitions to connect students with constitutional values.
The 150‑km Rashtriya Ekta Padyatra
- A central event of Constitution Day 2025 is the 150‑kilometre National Unity Foot March (Rashtriya Ekta Padyatra), organised to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and celebrate his legacy of national integration.
- The march begins at Karamsad, Patel's ancestral village, and concludes at the Statue of Unity in Kevadia on 6 December 2025. The route is designed to be both symbolic and participatory, highlighting Patel's vision of a united India.
- Key political leaders will flag off the march, which will feature floral tributes, cultural performances, and thematic stops along the way. At each of the 150 stops, exhibitions, village assemblies, and community events will engage citizens and youth, promoting national unity, civic values, and grassroots development.
- The padyatra is part of a broader campaign to foster active civic participation and to make the ideals of the Constitution tangible, reflecting both Patel's role in unifying India and the ongoing effort to strengthen national cohesion.
Panchayats And Grassroots Participation
Across India, Panchayats and local bodies will actively participate in Constitution Day celebrations:
- Mass readings of the Preamble in local languages will take place in villages.
- Communities will set up "Preamble Walls" and hold events under the theme "Our Village, Our Constitution".
- Schools and youth groups will host exhibitions, debates, and creative competitions to engage citizens with constitutional principles at the local level.
- These efforts ensure that the celebrations extend beyond ceremonial events and connect with people at the grassroots level.
History And Significance Of Constitution Day
- 26 November 1949 marks the day the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution, although it came into effect on 26 January 1950, celebrated as Republic Day.
- The day was declared Constitution Day in 2015, coinciding with the 125th birth anniversary of Dr B. R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution.
- The day promotes awareness of constitutional rights, duties, and democratic values, reminding citizens that the Constitution is the foundation of India's democracy.
- Beyond legal structures, the Constitution symbolizes justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, guiding the country and its people. Constitution Day celebrations encourage citizens to engage with these principles actively.
The Significance Of Constitution Day
Constitution Day is a chance to understand what India's Constitution means in everyday life. The celebrations in 2025 from the Central Hall ceremony to the 150‑km Unity March highlight how the Constitution is both a historical document and a living foundation for democratic values.
Taking part in readings, discussions, and cultural activities allows citizens to show their support for the Constitution, its values, and the vision of the leaders who created it. It is a day to celebrate unity, democracy, and civic responsibility.
Constitution Day 2025 is more than a formal observance. With symbolic events at the national level, active participation in Panchayats, and the expansive Rashtriya Ekta Padyatra, the celebrations invite every Indian to connect with the ideals of the Constitution. From learning about rights and duties to reflecting on the values that unite the nation, 26 November is proof that the Constitution is ours to uphold, live by, and protect.
