Competitive Eater Who Ate 600 Pieces Of Fried Chicken And 100 Burgers In One Sitting Calls It Quits
Japanese competitive eating icon Yuka Kinoshita has announced her retirement, bringing an end to an illustrious career that captivated millions. With a YouTube following of over 5.2 million, Kinoshita has been a trailblazer in the world of mukbang and extreme eating challenges. However, citing health concerns and the challenges of ageing, she has decided to step away from the sport that made her a household name.
A Journey Into The Spotlight
Kinoshita's rise to fame began in 2009 when she appeared on The Battle of Big Eaters, a Japanese reality show that showcased food warriors from across the country. Despite not taking home the top prize, her charming smile, petite frame, and jaw-dropping appetite endeared her to audiences. Recognising the potential of her unique talent, she launched her own YouTube channel in 2014, where she tackled outlandish food challenges that defied belief.
Her eating exploits quickly became legendary. She devoured towering stacks of burgers, heaping bowls of ramen, and mountains of fried chicken, all while maintaining a weight of just 47 kilograms. Among her most astonishing feats were consuming 600 pieces of fried chicken, 100 burgers, and 5 kilograms of steak in a single sitting. Her ability to ingest between 5,000 and 20,000 calories per meal made her a phenomenon, not only in Japan but across the world.
The Hidden Struggles
Behind the camera, however, Kinoshita battled personal demons. She recently revealed her struggle with bipolar affective disorder, a condition that led to a social media hiatus. Her return in August 2023 was met with relief and admiration as she candidly shared her journey to recovery. Fans who had admired her seemingly unbreakable spirit gained a deeper appreciation of her resilience.
Despite overcoming mental health struggles, the physical toll of competitive eating became increasingly difficult to ignore. On 1 February 2024, she made the heartfelt decision to retire, acknowledging that her body could no longer endure the extreme demands of her profession.
The Toll Of Time And Health
Approaching her 40th birthday on 4 February, Kinoshita spoke openly about the physical exhaustion she now experiences. "It is really hard for me to continue working as a big eater," she admitted. "I am very exhausted. My health has deteriorated over the years. It is no problem to eat like a normal person, but I will feel tired even when I am not full. So I am afraid I cannot eat as much as before."
Her words resonated deeply with her audience, many of whom had long admired her perseverance. Fans flooded her with messages of gratitude and support, reflecting on the joy and comfort her videos had provided over the years. One fan shared, "Your health is the most important. Thank you for your previous videos, which are healing to me."
Another expressed appreciation, saying, "When my spirits were low and I did not want to eat anything, I encountered your videos. You made me think food is delicious and so I went out to eat. I feel grateful to you."
A New Chapter Awaits
Though her competitive eating days are over, Kinoshita has found contentment in a simpler life. She has spoken about enjoying her time with her three beloved cats, stating, "I am not in the mood for love and I never thought of getting married. With my three cats, I am quite happy and content."
Her decision to retire marks the end of an era in the world of food challenges, but her impact will not be forgotten. Kinoshita leaves behind a legacy that goes beyond her incredible eating feats-one of resilience, authenticity, and an unwavering connection with her audience.
The Final Bite
While fans may miss her astonishing displays of gastronomic prowess, they will remember Yuka Kinoshita for more than just the food she consumed. Her openness about her struggles, her ability to bring joy to others, and her courage in prioritising her well-being have solidified her place in the hearts of many. As she steps away from the spotlight, she does so with the admiration and respect of millions, proving that sometimes, knowing when to stop is the greatest challenge of all.
