Close Call: When Cricket God Sachin’s Exit Was One Man’s Entry Into The Hospital!

Have you ever experienced some chaotic situations in your life which were so stressful and depressing at that time, but looking back you feel like laughing at what had transpired? I am sure everyone in their life has a story to tell that offered them a great amount of tension at some point of time but years later, it is considered a memory that one can laugh their heart out about.

For instance, when you go for your college and school reunions, you reunite with your gang of friends, your partners in every crime. You sit around a table discussing the risky situations you have been part of together, where you had saved your neck at the nick of time. And then wonder with a laugh, "How the hell did we manage to handle that nerve-wracking situation?" It is sometimes a funny mystery and I am sure this has occurred to many of you.

In this context, my acquaintance recently shared one of his personal incidents to me that transpired during his college hostel days. It's about how one thing led to a tumultuous turn of events but ended in a pretty unexpected way. Read on, I am sure this will make an interesting read.

When Sachin Got Out And Chaos Unleashed!

It was in the year 2011 of April 2nd, when after a good long 28 years, Team India had kissed victory by possessing the Cricket World Cup. That day Rahul and his friends gathered around in the T.V hostel room that was too tiny to accommodate them to watch the nail-biting match. "Oh No!" cried everyone in universal disappointment when Sachin Tendulkar exited the ground following Virender Sehwag. While Rahul sat there totally glued to the T.V. to find out what would happen next, his phone rang. He checked to see who was calling him at this very hour. It was none other than his 'Madras Machi' Karthik.

Before Rahul could ask him anything, he said immediately "Can you come over? I need to talk about something important to you." I let out a frustrated sigh. "Can I do so once the match is over, Machi?" he asked. And then came the typical emotional blackmail question "I thought you were my friend, aren't you? He asked back in a soft tone. Oh God! This guy was really too much, Rahul thought to himself in frustration. Curbing all his irritation, Rahul got out of the room and was left wide-eyed in surprise. Right in front of him, was the man himself.

Rahul in his broken Tamil asked, "Ok sollu. Enna matter?" (Ok, tell me. What's the matter?). "Let's go and talk on the ground" he replied, still not getting into the matter, adding to Rahul's frustration. "Hey see Machi, I want to see the match, it's not yet over, so shoot out with the matter already" he said, losing his control. It was pointless Madras Machi was adamant on pulling me away from the thrilling match a few distance away towards the college ground to tell his so-called important matter. He irritably obliged and followed him, breaking his head out about what top secret matter it was that he wanted to tell him at this very hour. Little did he know that it was the onset of an upcoming chaos.

"Machi, Anth ponnu is not responding to my calls or texts, I don't want to live anymore, So, I took poison" Karthik said, his eyes swelling up in tears. (Apparently his girlfriend didn't respond to his texts and messages so he gulped down poison). "Oh ok" Rahul said without a thought when the realisation hit him. "Wait! What? Poison" He screamed in disbelief. Karthik nodded. Rahul froze in his tracks for the very first time. Right in front of him, a guy had confessed he had taken poison to end his life. He wondered who would pick up the phone when everyone was into the match, trying to find out if Kohli or Gambhir could save the day.

Rahul couldn't waste a second. He ran at a rocket speed of 100-180 like Usain Bolt to the hostel T.V room. He got a guy out and shared the news with him. Two more guys took their bikes and followed Rahul who rode along with the poisoned Madras Machi and sped off to the nearby hospital. He was soon admitted, but in the midst of this, it had to be known which poison Karthik had taken, so Rahul returned to the hostel and tagged a guy along with him towards the backdoor to find that out. The sun was setting, and Rahul's search continued. After about 10-15 minutes, the villain - the bottle of poison was found.

When Rahul reached the hospital the atmosphere seemed quite creepy. Did we lose Romeo once and for all? Rahul thought. Around the bed where Karthik was lying, there was a huge crowd. Doctors, nurses and some other officials. They were not there because his condition was critical or anything like that. Apparently they were questioning his friends why he had attempted suicide.

There was a string of thoughts in Rahul's mind. It happened in the college hostel, if the college authorities knew, there was a high chance they would oust him from college. He rushed towards the doctor before anyone could speak, "Doctor, Sachin Tendulkar was bowled out today, he was so depressed about it that's why he did such a thing" Rahul lied. The doctor took the bottle from his hand. He laughed in scorn, "Who is going to die having a little bit of rat poison, the least he can get is some disability" This news spread like wildfire. From every nook and corner people came to visit this die-hard Sachin fan.

Just because he took his name Karthik too seriously, he had pledged that he would get himself a Malayali girl like Jessie into his life (characters in the romantic movie Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya/Ek Deewana Tha) which in turn made him into an overnight star with his suicide attempt.

With Dhoni being the star of the match, Team India won the World Cup that year but Rahul and his friends were in a dilemma. They had no idea if they were supposed to rejoice in victory or cry at the tragedy of the events that had occurred. Just when Rahul thought it couldn't get crazier, Madras Machi's one suicide attempt had led to a long hospital bill that was a real jaw-dropper!

Now Karthik has moved on, married with a beautiful family of his own. This incident is a bit light-hearted but saying so, there are a lot of us who get fed up with life for the silliest of things. By that I mean things that can be easily resolved. The problem is we just get frustrated too easily, we are not patient enough to wait for that silver lining at the end of the dark cloud. Just wait and see, it will be worth it.
