Banned From Broom In Brother’s Room : Court Says ‘No Entry’ To Sister’s Late-Night Cleaning Crusade
Sometimes, even the most well-intentioned actions can spark unexpected reactions. What seems harmless to one person may feel like an intrusion to another. It's a reminder that in our relationships, respecting boundaries is just as important as showing care for one another.
Here's an extraordinary incident that happened in Singapore, where a brother took his sister to court apparently for barging into his room at late hours at night to clean his room. Read further to know more.
Sibling Showdown
A family court in Singapore recently dealt with a peculiar sibling feud that led to mutual court orders. On October 31, two siblings took legal action against each other in a case that even puzzled the judge. The sister obtained a protection order after alleging her brother physically attacked her.
Meanwhile, the brother secured a domestic exclusion order to stop her from entering his room at odd hours to clean, something he claimed had been disturbing his sleep and invading his privacy for years. A third sibling testified that this odd cleaning habit had been a long-standing issue, fueling years of tension between the two.
The judge acknowledged that, while cleaning a sibling's room might typically be a harmless and even caring act, it can also become intrusive under certain circumstances.
Sibling's Late-Night Cleaning Spree
In this case, the brother claimed his sister had been sneaking into his room for eight years, escalating her cleaning routine from around 9 p.m. to late-night visits that sometimes stretched until 4 a.m., often disrupting his sleep and ignoring his repeated protests.
According to a third sibling, the brother would rush home just to lock his room, hoping to keep her out, but she often found a way in. When asked about her persistence, the sister simply said she "needed to do it."
Sister Defends Midnight Cleaning Routine
In court, the sister defended her unusual late-night cleaning sprees, saying it wasn't just about tidying up, it was her way of sticking to her own routine. "I got to go according to my own schedule, my free time.....I'm not their maid, I'm not their worker.", she explained to the judge.
Her insistence on cleaning her brother's room against his will stemmed from his refusal to lift a finger to do so by himself. "If the person does housework themselves, clean up their own room themselves, it's fine. But they don't even do so at all after 40 years of age. Not even one finger!" she added, claiming she wouldn't need to invade his space if he took care of it himself.
No Room for Compromise
The judge wasn't swayed by the sister's argument, saying that, as adults, she had no business enforcing her personal hygiene standards on her brother. While he condemned the brother's physical reaction as "unacceptable," the judge hinted that the sibling's relentless cleaning may have driven him to the edge.
Despite the court's order to keep out of her brother's room unless invited, the sister remained defiant, insisting she had every right to enter. "No, because ... this unit belongs to my dad, not him. If he's not comfortable, he can stay out. You ask him to stay out or get his own place. Because, literally, he (doesn't) upkeep his room and he'll breed all the (pests)," she said.
Well in the end the sister didn't seem to heed to what the court had ordered but if she continues with her midnight cleaning, she risks violating a court order, an offence that could mean fines, jail time, or probably both.
