The US singer Stevie Wonder received the top cultural honours in France. He has made the 'Commander Of Arts And Letters In France'.

Wonder was named as Commander in 1981, but the formal declaration had been delayed due to some scheduling conflicts.

French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand gave him the recognition of Commander of the Arts and Letters. Mitterrand described the singer as "music's familiar genius".

Wonder remembered his mother, when receiving the honour. "I receive this honour in memory of my mother and in memory of all of those that have made it possible for me to stand here today," said Wonder. He also said that he is much excited and 'breathless', as this reward is too precious for him.

Wonder received the lifetime achievement prize, at the event in Paris.
