Bikaner, Mar 1 (UNI) Horse breeders can rejoice as they now have a choice of breeding warrior horses akin to Chetak, the famous horse of legendary Mewar ruler Maharana Pratap.

This is due to Bikaner's National Horse Research Centre (NHRC), which has frozen and preserved semen samples of high quality breeds of Marwari horses and donkeys.

The centre will now provide free artificial insemination procedure for producing high quality breeds of Marwari horses and donkeys.

Senior scientist Dr Yashpal said the breeding period of Marwari horses falls between March and October. Hence horse breeders can bring their mares to the Centre for the free insemination procedure.

The NHRC is doing extensive work to save the Marwari horses breed. Last year, the centre collected semen sample from high quality breed horses from the horse farm belonging to Dundlod family and Udaipur's royal family.

The sample includes the semen of descendants of Chetak, the horse which belonged to Mewar ruler Maharana Pratap, who fought against the powerful Mughal empire of Emperor Akbar.

The centre has spent Rs 1.5 crore to set up a lab recently, where research is being done to improve the breed of Marwari, Manipuri, Askari and Spiti horses.
