The Students Federation of India(SFI) today called for a statewide strike in educational institutions while the Chhatra Parishad would observe a black day throughout West bengal tomorrow in protest against the death of Soumik Basu, a student of bengal Engineering and Science University(BESU) following a clash between two groups.
Soumik, who remained in coma for five days after being injured in the clashes between supporters of SFI and the rival Independent Consolidation(IC) inside the BESU campus, died yesterday.
Demanding a probe into the incident and punishment forth rose responsible for the student's death, SFI state committee Secretary Sudip Sengupta said examinations would be exlluded from the purview of the strike.
The SFI demanded that the Government appoint a committee to inquire into the circumstances that led to the student's death.
Alleging that the SFI was using force to dominate in all educational institutions, the Congress-backed Chhatra Parishad said it would organise protest meetings in different areas of the state.
The issue affected on the city during the day when Congress activists, led by former city Mayor Subrata Mukherjee, put up a blocade at a busy intersection in south Kolkata for about 50 minutes. The demonstrators also damaged a government owned bus.
Meanwile, police and Rapid Action Force(RAF) personnel maintained their presence in the BESU campus though most of the students vacated hostel rooms following a university order.
