In the picturesque land of Goa, known for its beaches and vibrant culture, a tale of grit and determination quietly emerged during its struggle for liberation from Portuguese rule. Libia Lobo Sardesai, a fearless freedom fighter and trailblazer, now celebrates a momentous milestone at 102 years old, honoured with the Padma Shri for her remarkable contributions to India's liberation movements.

Breaking Barriers : Goa's First Lady Lawyer And Tourism Pioneer

Affectionately called Libby, Libia's journey is a narrative of resilience and pioneering spirit. She shattered conventions by becoming Goa's first female lawyer and its inaugural director of tourism. With a law degree and a stint at All India Radio (AIR), she seemed destined for a career in law. However, Goa's oppressive political climate under Portuguese rule diverted her path. At a time when even wedding invitations were censored, Libia channelled her efforts into clandestine activities to further the freedom struggle.

The Voice of Freedom : Underground Radio's Unsung Heroine

In 1955, Libia, alongside her future husband Vaman Sardesai and Nicolau Menezes, launched an underground radio station named "The Voice of Freedom." Amidst strict censorship, this station became a lifeline for many Goans, broadcasting morale-boosting messages in Portuguese and Konkani. Operating in secrecy and braving harsh conditions, the team worked tirelessly to ensure twice-daily broadcasts for six years.

Their courage did not waver, even in the face of personal danger. The liberation announcement by General JN Chaudhuri in 1961 was a moment of triumph for Libia, who commemorated the occasion by presenting him with a flower from her garden, a symbolic gesture of victory and peace.

Libia's legacy is intricately tied to her association with Vaman Sardesai, another stalwart of Goa's freedom struggle. Following Goa's liberation in December 1961, the couple embarked on a celebratory act that would etch itself into history. Flying low over the state, they scattered leaflets proclaiming freedom. For many Goans, this was the first time they witnessed a plane flying so close, a poignant moment that united the people in jubilation.

Born into a Catholic family, Libia's life was rich with friendships and cultural ties. She shared a bond with celebrated artist FN Souza, and today, her legacy is immortalised in a mural by Souza's grandson, Solomon Souza. The mural, located near her residence, captures the essence of her younger self, symbolising her enduring influence across political, legal, and artistic spheres.

The award's announcement coincided with Republic Day, reflecting her life's alignment with the nation's transformative moments.
