5 Best Dog Breeds For Cold Weather
Some dogs are for cold weather. These types of dog breeds are better suited for cold weather than higher temperatures. Dogs like any of us are compatible with the native climate of their nationality. Just like we Indians find the chilling cold of of Europe unbearable and the Europeans can't withstand the oppressive heat of the tropics, dogs too thrive in their special climates specific to them
Dogs for cold weather cannot tolerate heat. If you decide to keep them in a warm country like India then they have to be kept under air conditioning 24 hours of the days and special measures have to be taken to keep them cool
Some Popular Cold Weather Dogs:
1. Saint Bernard: A dog that hails from the Swiss alps and is adapted to its climate. It called a 'saint' because it was the traditional type of dog breed to accompany Christian monks on their humanitarian expeditions. A very sturdy dog to have but they just cannot tolerate heat.
2. Golden Retriever: This friendly and furry dog is the perfect family dog to have for your kids. They are large, lovable and love to 'fetch' being from the retriever family. Due to their thick fur they feel very warm in higher temperatures so you have to cut it short or keep them in air conditioning. They are not true to their Scottish decent as they adapt well to other climates as well.
3. Alaskan Malamute: They are obviously snow dogs and as the name suggests native of the ice kingdom of Alaska. These dogs have an almost impenetrable coat because their traditional occupation has been pulling sledges on thick sheets of ice. This type of dog breed has a bushy tail and can be easily mistaken for wolfs. These dogs adapt well to higher temperatures but cannot have too much time outdoors under the sun. They usually shed their heavy winter coat in spring to adjust to the rise in temperatures.
4. Chow Chow: This a famously furry dog that almost looks like a little lion for its mane. They are dogs made for cold weather with their double coated bodies and a tail like a makeup brush. Chow Chows are excellent watchdogs as they are extremely possessive about their master and home. They can be unfriendly to strangers if not socialised from the beginning.
5. German Shepherd: Is a popular breed shepherd dogs kept as pets. They are very brave and have immense strength. German shepherds can easily spend cold nights outdoors because of their thick coat. Although they are not furry, their coat is thick enough to give them warmth even when its snowing. But they are extremely intelligent and aggressive dogs who have most reported incidences of biting. They are used by the police as sniffer dogs very often.
These are the 5 most popular dogs for cold weather that can withstand harsh and minimal mercuric conditions.
