Summertime Tips For Your Cats

By Staff

It's summertime. Your pet dogs may be wandering outdoors with great zest and fun, but your kitties are going to slug behind the doors for the entire day. Here are some guidelines to help your cats keep cool and free from hairballs, fleas, and other nasty things that savage their comfort during the year's hottest season. Read on to give them the best summer care this year.

War against the fleas
Summer is a war against fleas for cats. Unchecked infestations of fleas can cause anemia from blood loss particularly in kittens. If you observe your cat scratching its fur and aren't sure if fleas are the cause, use a flea comb on your cat and observe the tiny black dots that emerge on the comb. Keep a jar or bowl of diluted bleach nearby, and as you collect fleas on the comb, shake them into the jar. The fleas will die quickly. You can get rid of them by juts giving them a bath using a flea shampoo. You can also use mild baby shampoo.

Summertime and Hairballs
Hairballs are particularly bad in summer, when cats tend to shed more. Here are some tips to give it a hairball relief this summer. Give your pet a special hairball formula food, with high quality ingredients.

Some of the home remedies for it is a small amount of butter (about 1/2 teaspoon) two or three times a week. You can even feed them a teaspoon of canned pumpkin (non-flavored) or baby food squash. These fruits also help with constipation or diarrhea.

Water, Water and Water
Don't let your cat dehydrate in the summer heat, as dehydrated cats quickly lose their appetites. Make sure to have a bowl of cold water filled every time it gets empty. Your cat will surely thank you for this kind gesture.

Its time for Vaccination
Here are some of the approved vaccination protocols recommended by the VAS Task Force as well as the American Veterinary Association and the American Association of Feline Practitioners;

  • Rabies Vaccine
  • Rhinotracheitis AKA Feline Herpes Virus
  • Feline Calicivirus
  • Feline Panleukopenia Virus Vaccine

    Cats grooming supplies
    Although cats are self- cleaning animals, they need assistance during summer, in the form of routine brushing for prevention of hairballs, claw trimming, detangling mats, dental care products to prevent tooth decay and loss, and the occasional bathing when they've rolled over something nasty

    When your cat looses its appetite
    Cats usually eat less during summer. You can see this appetite affecting it seasonal weight. However you can make their food fun to eat, by introducing food like tuna juice in the regular food. Give them plain meat. Make sure it doesn't contain onions. Try a number of flavors until you hit on one your cat likes. Give soft foods for older cats that they can lick than chew. To add fiber to the diet give your cat canned pumpkins, as most of them love it.
