There are many ways to make your home smell special and nice, and one such way is through the use of potpourri. Making your own potpourri at home saves you the cost in a great way. The best way to make potpourri is by using dried scented flowers and other eco-materials.

The word "potpourri" derives from a French word called pot-pourri' which means 'pot' and 'stale'. However, though the name refers strongly to stale, you do not use stale wet flowers to give you a scented smell. The reason being that stale wet flowers smell bad and will only create a not so good odour in your house. When you make potpourri at home, you need to use dried flowers and a mixture of herbs to create that awesome fragrance.

Freshly cut sweet smelling flowers can be used to make potpourri at home. Flowers like roses and carnations emit a sweet smell. Let the flower wear out and then dry them in the sun. When dry, place them in a bowl and sprinkle lavender essence over it.

Herbs
There are specific herbs you can try out to make potpourri at home. Herbs like mint and lemon grass are a few sweet and strong smelling herbs to try out.

Spices
There are a lot of people who love the fresh smell of spices. Cinnamon and cardamom mixed together in a bowl is a great combination. Sprinkle a drop of clove oil over these spices to bring out the strong aroma.

Leaves
You can use dry leaves to make a potpourri at home. Leaves which bring out a natural essence in them is rosemary and sage.

Ginger
Ginger is one of the best roots you can make a potpourri with. Grated ginger kept in a bowl with vanilla essence is a great combination for you to use.

Fruit Peels
The fruits peels of orange and lime will give out a citrus aroma in your home. Chop the peels of the orange and lemon and place it in your home near the entrance to the door or window.

Stiff cotton
Dip cotton in an essential oil and dry it. When dry place it in a bowl and sprinkle the same essential oil over the dried cotton. This is a unique way to make your own potpourri at home.

Spice leaves
You can use a spice leaf to make a potpourri at home. Bay leaf is considered to be the best spice leaf to try and bring out a rich aroma.
