Wine Shine

Connoisseurs of fine wine have an indispensable taste for wine glasses as well. Choosing wine glasses popularly known as stemware reflects the finesse and class of wine. It is for this reason that wine glasses have to be carefully and wisely chosen. With a little knowledge you can be a fine wineglass collector.

Wine's appeal is not just with its taste and smell, but also its look. Light plays well on wine and it is a good idea to play with light. Traditionally wine glasses with larger and broader bowls are ideal for red wines and narrower wine glasses can be used for delicate aromas of white wines. Tall slender tulip glasses are right to flaunt sparkling wine and champagne.

When choosing wine glasses see that they are plain and clear. This radiates the color of wine and reflects aspects of the grapes used, the age of the wine, and so on. This may not be seen in frosted and coloured glasses. Wine is at its best when in crystal.

A wine glass must always have a stem, not just for aesthetic reasons, but mainly to ensure that the warmth from the hand does not increase the temperature of wine that has been served chilled. The shape of the bowl is also of considerable importance. Good wine glasses taper in at the top, so that the aperture is narrower than the bowl lower down. This leaves ample room for a swirling action to release the aromas from the wine, and this tapered shape serves to concentrate the aromas towards the nose, thus appealing to the senses.

Red wine should be served at room temperature and that white wine should be slightly chilled before serving. Be sure not to fill a wine glass too full. Wines are mostly served filled to half the glass capacity and not to the brim. It allows savoring and enjoying the taste as well as colour.

Traditionally, a different wine accompanies each course and is all the more enhanced with a table setting that includes a wine glass for each wine. The glasses should be arranged in the order they are to be used and basically from right to left. Wine is traditionally poured from the right, while food is served from the left.

Your Glass care: Wash your wine glasses with hot water and rinse thoroughly as even just a trace of lemon or scented detergent can ruin the nose of a wine. Always hold the glasses up to the light to check if they are clean. Once washed, allow the glasses to drip dry. Once dry, a quick polish will quickly rid them of any residual watermarks. Store them standing upright on the stem in a clean, odour-free cupboard.
