By Super Admin

Did you know that aquariums have therapeutic benefits? At Purdue University, researchers found that displaying tanks of brightly colored fish curtail disruptive behaviors and improve eating habits of people with Alzheimer's disease. It is also said that people who are exposed to fish tanks appear to be more relaxed and alert.

Aquariums are one of the most popular hobbies in the world. It is soothing on the system as well. Just look into an aquarium for two minutes and feel a calm run through. You could have a wonderful collection of fish and have a very exciting aquarium. First timers just focus on a few key points.

Aquariums are fun no doubt. For beginners it would be convenient to use a small aquarium. They can be trendy. A twenty-gallon tank can house a nice collection. Decide where you would like to place the aquarium. On the basis of this you can then decide if you need to buy an aquarium stand or not. Sometimes these stands can be more expensive than the tanks themselves.

Avoid direct sunlight on your fish tank. Keep it in a place where the lighting and decor will complement each other. If you decide on the location of the aquarium before hand, you could have options of different sizes and shapes for them to match the room's decor and architecture. You could have a glass or an acrylic aquarium. Before you buy one, check for scratches and cracks. It would be best if you buy fish on another day after you are sure about the tank and are convinced that it works well.

Choosing fish

First take a look at the tank, which houses the fish. If the top and sides of the tank have accumulated algae or any kind of residue, look no further. The water in the tank must always be clear. Once you find that the tank and water in it is clear take a look at the plants in the tank. If they are decaying you need to move on. The plants need to be healthy. Once all these criterions have been met, take a look at the fish. Do not go for 'just arrived' stock of fish. They will be stressed with travel and might be carriers of diseases. If you feel the fish you are looking at is sick, don't give a second thought. Choose active, alert and healthy fish. Before moving new fish into your regular tank, preferably quarantine them for three days.

How to add fish into the tank

Keep the chlorine level in the aquarium at zero. Keep a clean measuring cup and a small net handy. Turn off the lights in the aquarium. Now place the sealed fish bag in the fish tank filled with water. Let it float for 10 minutes. Then slowly add a cup of water in the tank into the fish bag. Let it float for 10 minutes. Slowly using the net draw the fish out of the bag and immediately place it in the tank. After placing all the fish in the tank, discard the water, do not out it in the tank. Keep the lights off for about 5 days till the fish gets adjusted to the new environment.
