1. Reflective Curtains: If your home does not have an air conditioner then it makes sense to go for these special curtains to keep the sun and heat out of your home. These curtains are basically made of plastic with one side as the shinny reflective one. The reflective side has to face outwards and it will reflect sunlight away from your home.
2. Blackout Curtains: Black out curtains are those that are used in auditoriums and theatres to totally cut out any light. While these typically black curtains work well for theatres where the screen needs to be illuminated, it doesn't look so great in your home. So a great drapery idea is to use the blackout cloth for lining your curtains. You can stitch the curtains to keep the sun out with bright cotton fabric on the home facing side.
3. Curtains With Lining: Even if you are not using black out cloth, any kind of lining will make your curtains thicker. It will cut out the noise and also provide better protection against scorching sunlight.
4. Light Coloured Curtains: Summer curtains should always be light coloured (unless they are black out). Whites, creams and peaches reflect the sunlight. Whereas, black, green and blue absorb it. It is not just about the light, the heat that it transmutes is also a factor while using drapery ideas. So the lighter the curtain colours, the cooler your home will be.
5. Fabrics For Curtains: Curtains are mainly about fabrics and some summer fabrics fare better than others when it comes to keeping the sun at bay. Cotton is undeniably the best summer fabric for wearing in the summers. It can also be the best curtain fabric provided it is thick enough to block the light. Other than that velvet is a good option because of it's thickness. Silk is alright provided it is boosted by a thick lining. On it's own, silky satiny curtains will get a sunburn.
6. Layered Curtains: You definitely want to keep the sun out with thick drapes but you still want to enjoy the evening breeze. So instead of suffocating yourself with thick blinds, you can have a layered pattern. Light lace curtains for the evening and thicker curtain covers over them. The cover can be parted and tied in the twilight.
These home decorating ideas can help you get curtains to block sun light and heat.
