Diya, also known as deep, is a small earthen lamp made with clay. Diyas are lighted and kept in every corner of the house during Diwali. It is believed that diyas bring light and sparkle in the house whilst welcoming Goddess Laxmi in the house. Diya is lit during Diwali as it is the festival of lights. A traditional diya is simple with no decoration and earthen color of the clay or mud. Nowadays, people decorate the diyas and use them in rangoli design or in the house. 2. Use fabric or acrylic paint to color the diyas. These paints doesn't remove after putting oil or soaking them in water.

3. Soak the diyas in water for 15-30 minutes. Let it dry and then colour them. Choose bright colours such as green, red, pink, yellow and orange.

4.Colour coordinate with creativity. Use two colours and blend them together. For eg, colour the diya with red and yellow border and outline, or red and green to make the diyas look beautiful and colourful.

5. Use a thick paint brush to colour the whole diya. Let the colour dry. Then use a thin brush for outline decoration.

6. For outline diya decoration, one idea is to use a thin brush and draw criss-cross lines with white paint or some contrast colour.

7. After colouring, let the diyas dry. Leave the diyas for 3-4 hours.

8. For outline, you can use a golden shimmer paint or sprinkle glitter on the outline. Use thin brush to draw the golden lines.

9. For diya decoration, one of the creative idea is to use glass pieces to make them attractive. Buy small pieces of glass and stick on the corners.

10. You can also use colourful beads or shells. In the outer side of the diya, you can paint the Om to make it look traditional.
