The Bathroom Personality

By Staff

You are imaginative or inspirational, you are generous or stingy, you are stylish or regular, all that and a lots more can be told to a perfect stranger by your 'bathroom'. Yes, you got it right it is your bathroom that speaks about you and lets out the insight to your personality. When you decide to stop at a gas station, the first criteria to consider are the cleanliness of the restrooms or when you dine at a restaurant or have a drink at a bar, you inevitably inspect, scrutinize, and grade the state of their facilities, which tends to reflect the establishment's overall quality. Likewise the same rule applies to homeowners: guests and prospective home buyers attach a lot of importance to bathrooms.

It is a general tendency to renovate your living room, garden, main gate, kitchen or even the dog-house to flaunt at the guests, but most of us forget that one visit to the most private room of your house-the bathroom and the guest gets the ever-lasting impression about your lifestyle. So, it basically depends up on you to maintain your bathroom and make it look warm and welcoming.

Invest a little more of your time, money and energy to the smallest and the most ignored room of the house. To be able to bring about the best out of your bathroom there are a few facts you need to keep in your mind.

Cleanliness and maintenance
For showers and bathtubs, having a good bead of caulk is key. If you have tile, make certain that the grout is solid and not full of holes or missing in some spots. Bathroom curtains look pretty but also get very dirty, any time you notice white film or black mold, particularly on the bottom of the door or curtain, pull out the curtain or door and scrub it down with an abrasive cleaner. Often, small amounts of water will begin to seep out from the base of the toilet seat. This is an early sign that the sealing ring is worn or no longer viable and bigger leaks are on their way.

It is an ignored fact that bathroom sink are dirtier than kitchen sinks, imagine all that goes down a bathroom sink: toothpaste, spit, blood, makeup, hair, shaving cream, not to mention the occasional cotton swab, Q-Tip, jewelry, and other small objects. As often as you can stomach it, pull the drain stopper and clean it thoroughly. Scrub it off, soak it in vinegar, then toss it in the dishwasher. This process should remove the mold and gunk that can build up in there without a solid cleaning.

Space
Though most of the bathrooms are quite small there are techniques to give an impression of space to them. Pull out the floral wall paper and go for wall paint in white or beige, as these colours make the room look large. Minimize the bathroom clutter and put them away into the vanity or glass cupboards on the wall. Also, installing polished tiles and hanging mirrors lets the area reflect itself, thereby creating the feel of additional square footage.

Lighting
Put in a glass-block window that lets light in from other rooms. Mount some wall sconces that take up little space yet shed lots of ambient light or just fire up some candles to generate a romantic mood.

Fixtures
Wall-hung sink which frees up floor space or a pedestal sink installed in an out of the way corner can deliver the elegance you want with the openness you need. Install a unit that works as both shower and tub. If you still want luxury, claw foot tubs actually free up space around the walls and can be turned into a shower or Jacuzzi depending on the model or simply install a single-stall shower in a corner. To make it invisible to the naked eye, invest in frame less doors or a clear shower curtain for a transparent appearance. Instead of the regular style you can go for a hung toilet that has no tank attached so it slides right up against the wall.

Today's bathrooms are no longer utilitarian, but a showroom of their own, so next time you call over your interior designer, make sure you have him plan your bathroom as well!
